William Huns- berger, Souderton, Pa.: Times change quickly! WWat was new yesterday, already falls into the "I Remember" catagory, today. As new methods, new techniques are quickly intro duced, the remembering col umn swells. For instance, in the span of my short lifetime, the preser vative methods and ingredients' have drastica 1 ly changed. 1 can remember, as a boy going to the ice house along the 1'erkiomen Creek in C.reen L a n e , P a . , t o g e t b l o c k s o f ice for our ice box. Inside the cavernous stor age houses last Winter's ice was stacked high. It was cov ered with sawdust to help re tard the melting process. We loaded our blocks of ice -in our Model T Ford truck and quickly carted them home. They went into the icebox to keep the milk and other foods cold. Someone always had to be alert and remember to empty the drain pan under the icebox so it would not overflow onto the kitchen floor. Today the only concern about the refrigerator is that the electricity is on. I, for one, today am glad the icebox is something to look at in a museum.-- ^-T t--- Remember when the Amer ican railroads took great pride in their property? Especially, the stations. Most stations had flower beds on every available little plot of ground around the sta t i o n . I e v e n r e m e m b e r w h e n the crossings still were tended manually and the gate keeper was on duty?-* When he wasn't busy on r a i l r o a d b u s i n e s s h e p l a n t e c f and weeded his flower bedS around his little house. These spots of color always added so much beauty to the property. We always looked for them wherever we went. Now the stations that are still open are drab and neg lected. The crossings are auto mated and the gardens are long gone from them, too. In some communities local serv ice and civic clubs have kept up the, stations gardens and flower beds but for the most part they have joined the long list of" I Remember" memories.
