Political Corner I * - - % HAN AH AN TELLS REASON FOR VOTE against TAX * "There are ^Wo basic rea sons why I voted against the state income tax", Rep. Tom Hanahan, Democrat, McHenry, announced. "I object strongly to simply adding another tax on top of the extremely regressive taxes which the people of my district and the rest of Illinois pay to maintain state and local gov ernment.-- --: ---- "The income tax is probably the most fair tax of any that can be levied. I have always maintained, however, that re form must come before any additional taxes are placed on the people," Hanahan said. "The tax as requested by Clover nor Ogilvie will produce a surplus in the state treasury of at least $200 million in 1970. "I do not believe the peo ple should be overtaxed simply to further the political am bitions of one man. The state is not a business to be run at a profit. Extravagance in pub lic office is not in the public interest. "The Governor's budget is the largest and fattest in Ill inois history. ^ "It is time for reform and austerity. I voted against the tax because neither is in sight," Hanahan said. SHOP IN MCHENRY BUSINESS FORECAST There is considerable good news for the worker who wants continued good business and is tired of regularly paying high er prices, according to Robert Krebs, president, Caldwell In dustrial Supplies, Inc., Wau- kegan and Elk Grove Village. He does ni^t see prices go ing up any more this year Krebs stated that "it appear that manufacturers have ed a pric e plateatr and increase prices any more year. Nobody is talking higher prices." Explaining that any more price increases would be dif ficult to obtain, he noted that a recent 5.3 per cent increase on abrasive grinding wheel prices had to be rescinded. There are more and more ex amples of higher prices no lon ger holding, he stated. His industrial supply com pany is considered to be an ex cellent barometer of near term northern Illinois-southern- Wisconsin economic conditions because of the thousand or more industrial and servce firms his firm regularly is in touch with in the area between Rockford and Beloit and Lake Michigan.
