PA . \DE JUDGES -- Mrs. Grant Ernst, pres ident of the Woman's Club of Wonder Lake and federated with the Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs, participated as one of the jud ges in the first annual Venetian parade spon sored by the Yacht Club of Wonder Lake. Jud ges rode aboard a pontoon boat and observed the forty-one boat entries. Other judges for the occasion were Ray McCann of the Master as sociation, Dr. Emily Svoboda of the Yacht club Health department, Rozanna Vlatvskyofthe Garden club, Swede Ullman of the American Legion, Bill Fitzgerald owner of the pontoon boat, Ward Ehredt of Kiwanis and Orv Gossi of the Advisory board. Shown in the picture are the judges oft the pontoon boat leaving the dock at the "Wharf". The Drivers Seat System To Locate Railroad Freight Cars Has Application For Highway Travel, Too Have you ever heard of the " Automatic Car Identification" (ACI) system? Probably not, un less you're a railroad man. The railroads say it may save them up to $2 billion a year. The system's major compon ents are a trackside electronic scanner and small strips of reflective sheeting affixed to the side of each box car. The scanner sends out a highly- concentrated beam of light which "reads" the reflective strips, which are coded to rep resent numbers. The reflective material "bounces" this infor mation back to the scanner. It is then fed to centrally- located computers which "read out" the box car numbers for railroad operating personnel. The system has an applica tion for highway travel, too, at freeway toll stations.' In fact, a small-scale test is going on right new n a major Eastern turnpike. Basic procedure would be the same. Ideally, an electronic scanner would "read" a small reflective sticker coded with a number, as a vehicle whizzes through an "express" toll gate. The number of toll gate passes would be "read out" at a cen tral location and the owner of the vehicle would receive a bill at the end of each month. In es sence, the reflectorized sticker would be a toll gate "credit card." Advantages of the system would be fairly important: Costs would be reduced since fewer toll gates f«uld handle more traffic. Delays would be non-existent since drivers would not have to line up to give money to an attendant, or to throw nickles and dimes into a bin. Above all, the system would bring increased safety. Toll gate areas are danger areas, particularly when lane-switch ers are at work. Any system that would eliminate braking and ac celeration at toll gates would certainly be desirable on the basis of safety, alone. Accident figures show the interstate highways are much safer for motorists. Death rate per 100 million passenger miles on our well-signed, well- designed interstate system was about 2.4" last year, compared to a figure for all highways of 7.6. Interstate highways pose haz ards Cor the anima however. A recer Ionia county, Mfrr mission revealed 1 imals and birds a 34-mile stretch there, last year. Ai tims, were 459 r< deer, 54 skunks,' 64 dogs, 94 cats, 18^ 23 fox, 19 owis, ul 17 weasels and 11 crow WED. JULY 16, 1969 - PLAINDEALER - PG. 5 com- vic- BROKEN EARTH . . . One of the more common mi nor injuries to plague our chil dren are puncture wounds caused by rusty nails, splin ters, glass and a wide array of sharp objects. Although we think of these as "minor" in juries, they often pose very def inite dangers in that they are difficult to clean thoroughly, often they do not bleed well, and the threat of tetanus can not be taken lightly. It is ad visable to seek professional treatment in cases of this nature and most certainly, in case of fever, pus or red streaks in dicative of infection, a doctor should be consulted.
