AUGUST 6, 1969 FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from th« files of July 25, 1929) Bald Knob is one of the high est points in this nature's par adise and was named in mem ory of Chief Bald Knob, one of the most gallant Indian Chief- tans of the Pistaqua tribe, who used this piece of highland ex tending out into the beajutiful lake as a lookout mountain for observation of their enemies, the Black Hawk tribe and also the white men as they wound their way toward the golden west through the Fox River trails. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Smoak and the latter's brother, Ed mund W'irfs, had a narrow es cape from death last Sunday night when the car in which they were riding was wrecked by a careless motorist. Miss Helen Rice of Richmond, a graduate of the McHenry Com munity high school in June, is to become a bride on July 30. She was guest of honor at a shower given by Mrs. F.N. Wilson of Richmond. On and after June 13, Fred Weinschenker will be in Mc Henry with fresh fish from Lake Poygan every Thursday noon. A „large number enjoyed the day as the annual affair is always looked forward to as a big event and members of the board, county officials and their friends were invited. It is the Mobile Blood Bank that will arrive in Woodstock from Chi cago for the McHenry County Red Cross starting August 22 for three days. The County 4-H Club Feder ation made up of 315 girls and 225 boys is busy raising money to buy an ambulance to be pre sented to the army this fall. A Mr. and Mrs. John Braeske of Oakhurst will observe fifty years of married life July 29. A host of friends in the vicin ity of McHenry were saddened last weekend at news that Mrs. Jennie Eddy, 71, for twenty- eight years a resident of this city, had passed away at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan. She had been confined there for the past three weeks after breaking her leg in a fall in her home. Mr. and Mrs. J. Dickerson of Tothlingborough, England, announce the marriage of their daughter, Gwendoline Mary, to Corp. Robert Kilday of this city. The Catholic ceremony was performed at Rushden July 1. Glen Anderson of McHenry, a friend of the groom stationed in that vincinity, was able to be present at the ceremony. Fritzel's Riverside hotel is now prepared to serve appeti zing meals whether it is a delicious luncheon pr a full course dinner. Mrs. Rose Mueller and niece, Emily Simon, recently returned from a two weeks visit with Lieut, and Mrs. Fred J. Muel ler, 4n Boston. EKxring their stay many historical and beau tiful points of interest were visited including the home of Paul Revere, Old South Church, the Original Boston Oyster House, the cemetery in which Calvin Coolidge is buried, a concert at Boston Symphony hall, Wellesley college, which graduated Madame Chiang Kai Chek, the Holy Name cathe dral and later the gron> sailed through Boston Harbor to Nan tucket Beach. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 30, 1959) A Ringwood girl, Pat Hogan, is one of five attractive county girls who will be seeking the title of 1959 4-H queen at the county fair in August. Mrs. Harold Frett is the new secretary employed by the high school board of education at the last meeting she will resume her duties Aug. 3. Pretty little Teresa Dason, 5 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Dason of McCul- lom Lake, received the crown as Miss McCullom Lake during the annual summer carnival Saturday evening. Wayne Chase of McHenry was treated by a local physician for injuries sustained when his car overturned on Lincoln road. Joan Burns, X-ray technician at McHenry hospital, was hon ored at a luncheon at McHen ry Country club by her co workers July 21. A very beautiful wedding was jmpized at St. Patrick's >lic church July 25 uniting Miss^Mary Ann Bolger and Mr. Jerome A. Sharp, Jr. Rev. Ed ward C. Coakley officiated at the ceremony. Wonder Lake members of an accordion band directed by El eanor Schlottman took part in the twentieth annual festival at the Exposition Gardens, Peor ia, during the Heart of Illinois fair conducted by the Illinois Accordion Band Association. They are very proud of their "A" rating. The Wonder Lake band emerged with the highest rating available even though it was among the smallest groifli participating. John Cherry, Ringwood, was painfully injured Monday when he fell 30 ft. from a tree as he was working with tree surgeons at Evans ton. He is in the Ev- anston hospital. BS Degree To Gary Anderson Gary J. Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Anderson, 3905 West Kane avenue, McHenry, received his bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineer ing at the Spring Trimester commencement exercises of Parks College of Aeronautical Technology of Saint Louis un iversity which were held on the college campus July 30. While at Parks, Mr. Ander son served as vice-president of Alpha Beta Pi, honor so ciety for aerospace engineering students, and was a member of the campus chapter of the American Institute of Aeronau tics and Astronautics.
