Hospital Head Reports Expansion Moves Forward Contrary to published reports from other sources, Memorial Hospital for McHenry County's expansion program is moving forward on two fronts, Kenneth Schuh, president, asserted this week. Schuh said the hospital Has both short-range and longer- range expansion programs un der way. The short range plan- construction of a$1,200,000 ad dition- is now out for bids. Longe r-range, Memorial Hospital for McHenry County's board and its administrator have beeen striving several years to evolve a county-wide medical complex. ' Toward this end, we have met with groups from McHenry hospital and the Crystal Lake hospital association as/well as with other interested citizens in Crystal Lake," explained Schuh. The Hospital Planning Coun cil for Metropolitan Chicago has given its endorsement to Mem orial hospital's $1,200,000 ex pansion plans. Inquiries made of Schuh con cerning development of a health center complex by the Crystal Lake hospital association and its plan to move ahead with a hospital prompted Schuh's cor rection of the county hospital expansion picture. , The Illinois Department of Public Health, in its July 8 letter to the Crystal Lake Hos pital association, asserted ' that adequate community sup port of the area to be served was not sufficient at this time for the granting of an initial permit to establish a hospital. Embodied in the recommenda tion (of the State department hospital licensing board) was the fact that adequate financial resources could not be provided without unified community sup port." Schuh explained that Memor ial hospital's longer-range program has been underway for some time, guided through studies with hospital con sultants and frequent contact - with other hospital groups. People inquiring about Mem orial hospital's expansion seem to have gained the impression that the Crystal Lake group is the moving force behind the development of a county-wide health center complex, Schuh continued. Actually, suc'h a complex has been under study by Memorial Hospital for McHenry County and McHenry hospital for some time. However, Schuh stressed that if such a complex is to become a reality, it will be achieved through the cooper ation of all three communities. One can't do it alone, he ad ded. Schuh also took Exception to one of the statements accred ited to David Blahnik, presi dent of the Crystal Lake group, when Blahnik was quoted, ' We do need a good hospital," and indicated it is a goal to be reached in referring to McHen ry county. This is the area he referred to in discussing the development of a health care center complex. McHenry county has twofine, modern hospitals with quality staff serving the central, southern and eastern sections of McHenry county at Woodstock and McHenry. Blahnik's state ment ignores established hos- WED. AUGUST 20, 1969 - PLAINDEALER- PG..I7 pitals serving now while longer- range plans are in the embryo stage," Schuh elaborated. Best estimates by such ex perienced people as Dr. Frank lin D. Yoder, director of the Department of Public Health, and Hiram Sibley, executive secretary of the Hospital Plan ning Council for Metropolitan Chicago, is that it could re quire a minimum of five years to develop wording plans and find a location for a medical center complex. This would be with a minimum of problems and with all communities unit ing toward that goal in a de-> termined fashion. Schuh contined to say that Crystal Lake has been strug gling for at least two years. McHenry hospital started ex pansion talk almost a year ago w ith little added progress. Even Memorial hospital's expansion has moved slowly though ap proved by the board a year ago. Right now, he added, prop er source of funds is\a po tential stumbling block because of the tight money situation. Memorial hospital's financial situation is strong, its 100- bed hospital completely paid for as it begins this major addition construction. Frank Harrison Attends IMPACT Frank Harrison, 1925 N.
