He compares with what we call "clinical teachers" in our medical and dental col leges* Send for the Bible book let below and test your own kiddies of reading age or use it in Sunday School. By - George W. Crane, Ph. I)., M.D. CASE K-573: Prof. J.B. Bish op teaches at South-Pastern Bi ble college in Lakeland, Flor ida. ' * **Dr. Crane," he befcan, "I recently made a classroom ex periment of your newspaper booklet with its various.objec tive Bible tests. "There were 115 students in this freshman class, so I gave them 120 of your test items at the start of the term. "The average Score was 71, with the highest being 107 and the lowest score was 40. "Five students got 100points or better! And the median score was 78. "After these students have completed our course on 'Old and New Testament Survey' I plan to administer the same test a second time. "My secretary then used your test with her Sunday School classes and reported to me that the questions greatly stimula ted the interest of her pupils." SCIENTIFIC TEACHERS Prof. Bishop combines the true scientific spirit with the vast practical experience of having previously served as a church minister for 15 years. He is what in medical and den tal colleges we describe as a "clinical professor." For those professional schools bring in talented pri vate practitioners who are ac tive physicians or dental sur geons to lecture to the students. Su<ih teachers are usually more popular than the full time, salaried professors, for the clinical doctors inject a lot of "horse sense" and practi cal "tricks of the trade" which textbooks omit and many a braintruSter or academic pro fessor doesn't even know. Obviously, Prof. Bishop's students are more Bible-orien ted than the usual teen-ajjer, since they have enrolled at a Bible College. For any American who scores 51 to 68 on that test is "Su perior" and 69 to 120 rates "Very Superior." The test combines our ob jective psychological quiz for mats so it helps familiarize teen-agers with the type of ex ams they will meet at college. Thus, this Bible test covers true-false statements, as well as the 4-answer or "multiple choice," as: "The man who killed Goliath was: ESAU - JONATHAN - NOAH - DAVID." Completion problems are al so included in which you fill a blank with the appropriate word, as: "The woman who betrayed Samson was named ." That is a more difficult type of question and thus not as pop ular with students as the true- false and "multiple choice," for the latter lets you guess, even if you have no previous knowledge of the correct an swer. In addition, this Bible test also involves matching prob lems as well as analogy items,, such as: "Adam: Eve: Jacob: AB- IFAIL" - SARAH - RACHEL - JEZEBEL." Children who may have had no Bible training whatsoever, are thus stimulated to "guess" on the "multiple choice" aid most of the other problems. Then their interest is re- OqRN ROOTWORMS Corn rootworm larvae are increasing number as the hatch of overwintering eggs continues. Untreated plants in one of our demonstration fields averaged 13 worms per plant. Egg-hatch is expected to con tinue for another 2 weeks, and the number of larvae will con tinue to rise during the next week or two--then level off as more larvae reach the pu pal stage. Damage to roots is beginning to show and will become progressively worse over the ne*t 2 weeks. Root- worm development is about a week later than last year. Except for extreme con ditions, it is generally too late to apply a basal treatment off the cultivator, since corn plant breakage and root pruning would be too great. The prospects of effective control by broadcast ing the insecticides without cul tivation are not good. CORN LEAF APHIDS Corn leaf aphids are begin ning to appear on corn. Indi- tained till the teacher gives the answers. Next, they keep their test and rush home to "show up" their parents, so this Bible test ac tually makes "associate tea chers" out of boys and girls! These winged females will now give rise to young-producing, small colonies of aphids within a few days. Aphid predators like lady beetles, aphis lions, and in sidious flower bugs are pre sent. These predators will feed on the- developing aphids. It is too ioon to predict the sever ity of corn leaf aphid infes tations. Corn leaf aphids suck the juices from the plants, caus ing the ears to be stunted and shriveled. Injury to the plants usually occurs just prior to and during tasseling. Early treatment is best. Treatment is warranted when corn is in the late-whorl to ear ly tassel stage and when 50 percent or more of the plants have a light to moderate num ber of aphids. At the latest, treatment should be made pri- ' or to brown silks. Spray treatments by ground or air, with 1-pound of mal- athion or diazinon or 54-pound of methyl parathion per acre, are effective. Allow 5 days for malathion, 10 days for diazin on, and 12 days^jgr methyl parathion between treatment and harvest for grain, ensilage, or stover. If corn is in the late-whorl stage, seed produ cers may prefer to use 1-pound per acre of either diazinon or phorate (Thimet) as granules. L.. VACCINE FOR RUBELLA TO BE AVAILABLE SOON "German Measles" have been responsible for hundreds of cases of blindness among newborn infants in the U.S. dur ing the past year according to the Illinois Society for the Pre vention of Blindness. A vaccine to immunize chil dren against rubella, commonly called "German Measles", will be available to physicians in Illinois within the next few months. The primary purpose is to prevent pregnant women from acquiring the disease from young children among whom it most commonly appears. If a prospective mother contracts "German Measles" within the first three months of pregnancy, there is a grave risk that the child will suffer permanent vis ual impairment or other phys ical handicaps. By the age of twenty, most women have had "German Measles" and therefore have immunity. CHARTER ISSUED The state has issued a char ter to the Villa Nursing Home, Inc., which has changed its name to Pistakee Bay Rest Home, Inc. To avoid potential hazards to detasselers, use phorate only on male-sterile corn. ANTIOCH MAN SHOWS JUNIOR CHAMPION BULL Approximately 305 head of Holstein-Friesian breeding stock competed for top honors at the Illinois State Fair Thurs day. Taking home top honors in the bull division was "O Mo Jo Nor ma £hampion" a two-yearyold bull selected as senior champ ion and also grand champion bull. Owner of this stately bull was John H. Moeller WheelA er. Showing the junior champion ) was Marium R. Goodridge, An-/ tioch. MILK PRICES A superpool blend price of at least $5.03 pej- hundred weight, eight cents over June and 15 cents higher than the July, 1968, producer price, will be paid dairy farmers for Grade A milk delivered during July to Chicago-market plants within zone 1 of the Chicago region al federal milk order. This was announced by Pure Milk as sociation, Chicago market agent for Central Milk Producers Co operative, an organization of 19 Wisconsin and Illinois dairy farmer cooperatives, including PM A, which supplies most of the milk for Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison and northeastern Wis consin. The eight-cent increase in the producer price is at tributed mainly to higher utili zation of Class I (bottled) milk and a higher price for Class II milk (milk used for other than bottling purposes).
