Laying out contour lines with the transit. / Testing sandstone samples for radioactivity. 1969 Outdoor Education Program Is Concluded The outdoor education pro gram offered by School Dis trict 15 was recently conclud ed. Besides numerous trips of science and social science in terest, the students were ac tively involved in laboratory work. The indoor-outdoor labor atory offered opportunities to work with concepts of earth sci ence, bio-science and simple chemistry. A stream table per mitted the students to work in small groups studying ero- sional effects and glaciation. The kettles formed in sand mor aines were very similar to those observed near Harvard. Rock samples collected on the trip were split to expose the fossils they contained. Stu dents also tested sandstone for traces of radio activity with the geiger counter. Limestone specimens proved to contain carbonates with the hydro chloric acid test. Three large display boards were filled with the rock spec imens. One containing about eighteen different types of rock crystals, was collected at one site. This great variety proved to the group that it was glac ial material moved here from many places on this continent. Anothej: was filled with var ious limestones that were ac quired. A third contains fern and flower fossils collected near Coal City. Microscopes were an impor tant part of the indoor lab be cause they allowed for small group and independent study. Various aquatic plant and an imal life specimens were i- dentified. Students also stud ied plant leaf and root struc tures of the grasses and legume families. A valuable tool used to ac quire mathematical concepts in the outdoor lab was the transit. This became a protractor for angular measurements, sight ing horizontal and vertical lines, selecting points of equal elevation for contouring, and for sighting the gradient of the stream behind the school. Much time was spent in the dark room developing film and printing the pictures of all of the activities. Each student has put together a scrapbook to record the summer's activities. In them they have numerous picture postcards of the var ious places visited. In addi tion, they have about 150 photos that they helped take, develop and print. Surveys completed by stu dents and their parents show that the program was enjoyed by both. All expressed a de sire to participate in a fu ture program, if one is of fered. They are convinced that school could be fun as well as educational. This program was partially funded through the Title I ESEA (Elementary Secondary Education Act) of 1965. Carl Wagner and Gene Maris taught the class during 1968and 1969 summer school sessions. PG. 8 - PLAINDEAIER - FRI. The Brevall studio on River- ide drive will have a supply of he necessary materials and Mrs. Brevall has an instruc tor's diploma in this delightful art. Bill Bolger, 4-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bol ger, broke his collar bone when he fell from a tree. Miss Leone and Kathleen Giv- ens, in company with Gladys and Pamela Rietesel, left Chi cago Monday on a trip which will last several days. They expect to spend some time at Mackinac Island and also visit several other points along the way. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 17, 1944) Mrs. James Bennett, sister of Ray McGee of this city, died Aug. 11 at St. Anthony's hos pital, Rockford, following a ser ious illness of several weeks. Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Penny Crue of Crystal Lake and Mr. Richard Conway of McHenry, the ceremony having taken place Aug. 5, at St. Simon's church, Chicago. ' A reunion of the Joseph W. Freund family was he Id'* last Friday evening at the Crystal Lake beach, with the serving of a picnic lunch and evening spent in swimming and visiting. Pre sent were Jos. W. Freund, Mc Henry; Mrs. M.J. Kent and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Liptrot and daughter, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Zvonar and family of Belvidere; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Cooley; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Nye and family; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Freund and daughter; Mr. and Mrs. Ho mer FitzGerald and children; and Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Say- ler and daughters. "Toots" Schmitt^ daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Schmitt, has enlisted in the Waves and was 'sworn in the same day but will not leave until the end of September. The phone in the Jos. J. Mil ler home gave several very long and persistent rings at five o'clock Monday morning and Mrs. Miller arose to answer. She found that it was none oth er than her son, Gerald, call ing from California to wish his mother a happy birthday. Coach McCracken has set the date for the first football prac tice at our local high school for August 2S. McHenry residents will have an opportunity to express their views on shopping, parking, and a number of other matters con cerned with the business life of the city when a consumer at titude survey is conducted Aug. 28, 29, and 31. The survey is a cooperative effort of the Chamber of Commerce and the city to obtain views of the av erage shopper. Eight local wo men will b^ stationed in var ious parts Of the business sec tions and will ask questions de signed to best assist in the sur vey. This year, the three public schools, the Community high, Junior high, and Edgebrook, welcome the largest number of new teachers ever to join the staff. When doors open on Sept. 8, there will be twenty-seven new faces greeting students of these schools, of this number, thirteen will be in the high school. McHenry friends will be in terested to learn of the nuptial rite Aug. 15, in Truth Lutheran church, Detroit, Mich., uniting Miss Elizabeth L. Father John Strzalka Pastor What makes them happy? In our experience there is one place where you can be sure of seeing happy faces. It isn't the bank--though certainly we have great respect for our banks. There people look intent, busy, serious with the financial responsibilities of life. Nor is it at the ball game. There is no joy in Mudville when mighty Casey strikes out. But when you go to church you see so many happy faces? It is as though people had left their troubles behind them . . . their fears . . . their worries . . . their little sadnesses and great sorrows. Yet we know that no one can really leave these behind him. They are part of our life--and our life goes with us wherever we go. But church is a place where men come to share their burdens with Someone Else ... someone who cares ... who helps ... who strengthens. And this kind of sharing--between man and God -- has always been the root of true happiness.
