The document covers 736 pedestri­ ans admitted to a major Nor­ wegian hospital over the per­ iod of one year. By inference, it found that drinking pedestrians are al­ most as much of a hazard as drinking drivers - to them­ selves, at least. Every fourth pedestrian injured in the 15 to 64 age group was found to be under the influence of al­ cohol. Injuries were most serious, and the mortality rate was high­ est, among older pedestrians. About half of those hospitalized in the over 55 age group died or suffered subsequent grave disability. Head injuries, the report found, are the most common type suffered by pedestrians, followed by injuries to, the low­ er extremities. For several years, law agen­ cies and insurance companies in the Scandinavian countries, as well as other groups interested in safety, have been sponsoring programs to encourage pedes­ trians to wear reflective ma­ terials on their clothing at night. The Norwegian report indi­ cates this idea is paying off handsomely. Of 103 pedestrians who were hit by vehicles during darkness,' 102 were not wearing any reflective materials. In the United States, the U.S. Public Health Service has em­ barked on a program to en­ courage pedestrians to wear reflective materials on their outergarments when walking on streets and highways at night.
