PEARL ST. McHENRY, ILL 385-0700 60 CLASSIFIED PHONE 385-0170 How Can I? By Anne Ashley Q. How can I Keep my cos tume jewelry tarnish-free? \. By keeping a stick of or- ^^jiinary blackboard chalk in your welry box. This same idea works well also in chests of silverware and other cabinets where tarnish-prone metal i- tems are stored. Q. How can I insure a good paint job on a plastered wall surface that has never been previously painted? A. By sizing the plastered wall beforehand. This sizing will seaJ up the pores in the plaster, and can be obtained from any good paint dealer. Or, you can also do a good sizing job with a coat of good inter ior varnish, thinned with tur pentine or mineral spirits and colored with a little of your wall paint. Q. What is an effective method of polishing tinware ? A. Hubbing it with a freshly- sliced onion, then with a clean, dry cloth. My household-hints book contains many other such easy-to-do suggestions on the care and cleaning of all kinds of metals. Q. How can 1 repair chipped spots on the enameled fixtures in my bathroom ? A. Try applying some arti st's white Oil paint to these chip ped spots. When this paint har dens, it looks almost like enam el. Q. W hat is a recipe for a good mushroom chowder? A. Combine condensed cream of mushroom soup with one can of light cream, one cup of sauteed sliced mushrooms, a few tablespoons of lightly sau teed onion, and sieved hard- boiled eggs. Heat and serve. Q. How can I clean an oil mop? A. You can do a good job with hot soapsuds in which a little ammonia has been added. Or, soak the mop in soda water, then wash in hot suds. Rinse well, and shake occasionally while it is drying. To apply fresh oil, pour polish into a shallow pan, and allow the mop to stand in this until it is ab sorbed. Q. How can I produce a quick adhesive for postage stamps or envelopes that have lost their mucilage? A. A drop or two of egg white or some evaporated milk will serve nicely in this emergency. Q. What can I do with mis- mates of hosiery whose mates have been discarded because of runs or tears? A. If you'll throw these mis- mates all together into boil ing water, they will emerge all of the same shade. Q. How can I remove mil dew stains from leather? PG. 18- PLAINDEALER- FRI. Youth Group Opens Season The Senior High youth group had its first meeting of the sea son last Sunday, with PamLow, Ernie Maalsch, Priscilla Mc- Intyre, Melody Ruth, Brad Shel- ton, Dae Watkins and Nancy White attending. Leaders are Henry Koehl and Ray Packer. Last year the group was formed just for McHenry young people but later included the Ringwood Methodist church to produce a larger organization. An expansion of ideas is planned in the season ahead. One of the first activities is the Red Cross drive on Fri day, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. through the city. On Saturday, Sept. 20, a car wash will be held at Faith Pres byterian church, starting at 9 a.m. and continuing until 5:30 p.m. Meetings are held every Sun day evening at 7 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian church. At the next meeting Sept. 14, there will be a movie called "Parable", followed by a short discussion. The youth group is welcom ing new members of high school age. Nancy White is reporter for the young people. SHOP McHENRY A. A little petroleum jelly rubbed well into the leather will usually chase the mildew away. Follow this with a polishing with a clean chamois. a Q. What can I do about some musty-smelling tea towels? A. Boil the towels for sev eral minutes in water contain ing two tablespoons of baking soda per quart, then launder them (using a bleach, if nec essary), and dry outdoors in the sunshine. Q. How can I deal with dis coloration in my bathtub caus ed by a dripping faucet? A. By rubbing with a paste of cream of tartar and per oxide, using a stiff brush. Plain old vinegar sometimes works too. DECORATIVE PLANTS Many common decorative plants or their seeds are poi sonous, Dr. Franklin D. Yoder, director of the Illinois Depart ment of Public Health, warns. "Children should be cautioned not to put any leaves, berries or seeds of fruit into their mouthsj" Dr. Yoder said. "It is also important to keep house plants out of reach of small children." The Federal Food and Drug administration's pri mary concern is that these plants and others which may cause serious illness are of ten sold to buyers unaware of the hazards involved. Often adver tisements and labels do not car ry adequate warning of the tox ic effects, special handling need or antidotes. The Federal Haz ardous Substances Act requires that potentially poisonous ar ticles bear cautionary labeling. rom Willi These Pre-Season Seroice SPECIALS MTftV &L,ole, Cooling System Special * DRAIN AND FLUSH RADIATOR AND ENGINE BLOCK * CHECK RADIATOR AND HEATER HOSES * CHECK THERMOSTAT * PRESSURE TEST 499 •Parts and Anti-Freeze Extra 8 CYLINDER AUTOMOBILES - 6 CYLINDER AUTOMOBILES - (parts extra) FREE INSPECTION: On all exhaust systems, shock absorbers. My boy friend doesn't like the clothes I wear. He tells me. but what am I going to do? He tells my girlfriend if I don't wear what he wants me to wear, he is not going to go out with me. He tells me this, too. So, every time 1 go out with him, 1 have to wear a dress. I like him a lot, so what can I do? I will have to wear what he wants and I don't like to wear a dress all the time. Will you please tell me what to do? OUR REPLY: Unless he tells you what kind of dress to wear, and what color, he isn't being 'bossy' about the situation. He has just let it be known that he is going to date a girl who wears a dress rather than bluejeans and her daddy's white shirt. He has made his point and we see no reason to criticize him for it Should he insist that you wear a dress on a hayride or to a picnic, instead of something more comfortable, we'd change our mind and say that he was going overboard on the sub ject. A boy who dresses neatly wants to be seen with a girl he can be proud of; he also likes to feel she thought enough of the date to do a little bit of getting ready.
