Warrior quarterbacks Steve Fain (10) and Kurt Knaack (12) receive game plan from Coach Bill Day prior to the annual soap bowl game last Friday night. The McHenry Warriors are hosts to DeKalb for a nonconference game at McCracken field tonight. Leading the or ange and black scoring was de pendable Brad Pictor with a winning time of 15:21. He was followed by three other War riors before the first Grant runner came in, and these were in order of finish, Keith Hut chinson, Glen Hampton, and Wayne Smith. Mike Freund fin ished the Warrior scoring with an &th place finish, followed closely by pusher Bruce Da vis In 9th, F.ric Weiss in 11th, Jim Sass in 12th, Fred Stark in 13th, John Oeffling in 14th, and Don Schubert in 15th. Coach Don Seaton feels that a num ber of runners are still not nearly in top shape even though we garnered such a lop sided win, but perhaps with a week's CORINE WILCOX TO HEAD DRIVE FOR HOSPITAL An army of teen-age volun teers, under the direction of Corine Wilcox, 334 N. The announcement was made by Miss Wilcox following her ac ceptance of the appointment by Danny Thomas, founder of St. Jude Children's Research hos pital. Assisting Miss Wilcox will be Sue Baur, 1210 N. Riverside drive, David Lgerstaffer, 5306 W. fountain street, Gay Ann Baecia, 413 N. Kent road, Nan cy Stender, 304 W. Mary lane? "I think the community will be pleased with the response of our young people, and I am confident that the teenagers can do the job,' said Corine. St. Jude Children's Research hospital was founded by enter tainer Danny Thomas to fulfill a pledge to St. Jude made in 1937. At that time Thomas was an aspiring, unemployed enter tainer. In desperation he- pledged to build a meaningful shrine to St. Jude, patron saint of the hopeless, if he ever found his place in life. Opened in February, 1962, St. Jude's has become unique. Here, for the first time, pe diatricians and biological sci entists combine their talents and efforts in a concerted cam paign to conquer the medical problems of children. more work, the Warriors will be ready when they meet Lar- kin on Tuesday and Elgin on Friday of this coming week. The little Warriors started their season also with a re sounding perfect score victory, 15-50. The first five Warrior Bulldogs 18-39 scorers were winner Terri Mc- Gibbon, John Seaton, John Diet rich, Alex Thomas, and Gregg Pickrum. So, all in all it was a great opening day for the thinclads, their next home meet is Tuesday, why not give them a look? After a couple of days away, we are back in the saddle again -- and ready to ride. The first memorandum to greet us is ' Pay your income tax." Kind of early. The in stallment isn't due until Mon day. Each year poisonous weeds cause nearly 2 million cases of skin poisoning and other skin irritations. American people- miss 330 thousand working days, have 3.7 million days of restricted activity and spend 50 million days In bed each year because of poisonous weeds. Survival and standard of liv ing depend upon how well we manipulate our environment to produce an ecological balance favorable to man. Weed control Is one of the major ecological manipulations necessary for human comfort as well as for efficient, economical crop pro duction. POEM WEEK CONTINUED!!?? Dear Cub-Packer Fan: \t least we get a sympa thetic Boo. But, we don't want sympathy. We want base hits. Seem1- like sympathy should be extended to you Cub fans at this stage. There is no joy in Cubville. They should have stayed out of New York, for feited those games and taken a much needed rest. Those old boys are tired. Sounds like you have given up on the Cubs and turned your attention to the Packers. Keep the faith. Our wife heard Irene Hughes (the ESP girl) speak this week and learned that the Cubs will rise again to win the race. The Cubs will never beat Baltimore in the World Series, but just think of the honor of being on the same field with those Orioles. So Ho - Ho! Wonder how many remember the "Gro ceries To Your Door" inno vation when Art had his store on Main St. That big walk-In truck would go up and down the streets and housewives went out to pick out what they need ed. The Warrior backs this year could have trouble behind a green and inexperienced line. This reporter feels that this ball club will probably get much bet ter as the season progresses, and an early victory could do much toward accelerating this process. A real test will come this Friday night, hope you can be there to help get the War riors off to a flying start. Wonder Lake Yacht Club wel comes a new boat to Its fleet, bringing the number of C scows to 18. The boat is owned by Dick Bland and Lenny Guerrea. Eleven sailors braved the weather and wind on Saturday, Sept. 6. Most of the boats car ried extra crew weight. John Wright in W 5 finished 1st. Bob Bird in W 18 was second, and our newest sailor, Dick Bland, in R 52 finished third. But then Dick relaxed his con trol, in jubilation, and hit a finishing mark, thus costing him a penalty of two places. The penalty gave Bob Billingsly in W 1 third, and W 19 fourth. Another new sailor, George Tensley, was so elated to place 6th, he and his wife and son crew, in celebrating, un balanced the boat and they cap sized - (That was their way of enjoying a drink) Nothing like a good drink af ter the race! Sunday's race was spectacu lar with 17 boats at the 10:30 starting line. All the boats made a good start and there was a big jam at the first mark with the unlucky ports having toglve way to the starboards. The old master, Don Coumbe, in W 9 made it around first and took an early lead, and no one could overtake him. W 8 was a close second, W 5 third, W 18 third, W 2 fourth, W 1 fifth. Saturday, Sept. 13, our fleet goes to Browns Lake, Wis., to test their superior sailing abil ity in three races against the Brown Lakers. Football Season is Here . . . SUPPORT THE WARRIORS! To those who saw the soap bowl Intra-squad contest, the following facts are evident. The Warriors do have some good size in the line this year, al beit quite slow, and some good looking backs. Tom Janik and Steve George impressedobser- vers with their running Friday night, and Don Thurlwell par ticipated in a number of tackles on defense. The Warrior pass ing game needs honing yet in this final week of preparation as evidenced by the fact that only a couple of pass attempts found their mark. Certainly the Warriors need to smooth var ious rough edges this coming week in order to start the sea son with a degree of success. In assessment of the rugged North Suburban, my often smeared, cracked, and cloudy crystal ball shows me the fol lowing finish: - Crystal Lake, 1; Barrlngton, 2; Zion Benton, 3; Woodstock, 4; Libertyville, 5; North Chi cago, 6; McHenry, 7; and Dun dee, 8. k \ V
