Whatever it was the McHenry Old Timers blast ed out 14 hits to wallop the Al gonquin Old Timers 12 to 4 in a five inning contest at Al gonquin last Sunday. This game was played as a memorial game to one of Al gonquin's favorites, Snapper Stalesky, who died last sum mer. For this event, Howie Judson of Hebron and Chuck Hiller of Johnsburg joined Mc Henry for the afternoon. The first inning started off in a familiar pattern when Jer ry and Jim Larkin smashed out base hits. Howie Judson then blasted a home run to deep left field, good for 3 runs. Algonquin came right back in their half of the first to tie the score at 3 all. The big blow was Don Blanken's triple to left. A good long throw by Harry Stilling kept it from be ing a home run. After the first inning it was all McHenry. The big blows were a double by A1 Phannenstill in the fourth and a base clearing "triple" to center by Jim Wiser in the fifth. Little did it mat ter that Jim forgot to touch first base. He drove in 3 runs and the game was safely out of reach. joe Stanek and Paul Judson turned in some fine fielding plays while Dick Freund play ed first base like he had never left it. Carl Thorsell was there, coaching third base and ready to play if needed. Arnie Anderson showed up about the fourth in ning and looked fit to play, but preferred to visit. All in all it was a great day with the losers treating the winners to refreshments and food at the Algonquin Legion. McHenry had their "purse* ready in case they lost. Since that wasn't the case the money will be donated to American Legion Baseball. McHENRY \ js n If A V ̂ 1969 McHenry High School Fall Sports Schedule Date Fri. Sept. 19 Sat. Sept. 20 Mon. Twenty-four bowlers, some of these people had nev er bowled, but showed off with a few good strikes. Several of the people could not make it the first day of bowling, in cluding the Welkers. There were twenty-two bowlers be fore starting which would have made it two people short for six lanes. Guess what! here comes Mr. and Mrs. J. Jan sen the last minute and all were happy to fill the quota of six lanes. Everybody had a ball - as the Pros will agree. After the first game, delicious rolls and coffee were furnished by the proprietor. If there are some more members interes ted in bowling* join the group for an afternoon of exercise and fun. Wonder Lake Mustangs Tie Juventus Soccer Team 2-2 Warriors block extra point attempt by the DeKalb Barbs in the first quarter action in Friday's first game of the season. The Warriors came out on the bottom end of the 19-12 score. This Friday the McHenry Warriors travel to Zion-Benton for their first confer ence game. PLAINDEALER PHOTO n "EARL WALSH SO I HEAR -SPORTS EDITOR- It couldn't have been "Cub Fever" that hit us last week, but some kind of a bug laid us low and made us miss a couple of sports events listed high on our* calendar. The Warrior football team opened here Friday night against DeKalb in a non-con ference game. Wanted to get a look at this '69 squad. Coach Day's boys must have put up a good game against DeKalb. Afer all, that isn't a set-up team by any stretch of the imagination. Hear Chuck Hiller got home from a long season in time to join the McHenry team. The boys were pleased to see Chuck show up for this game since it was played in memory of "Snap per" Zalesky, a fellow who did much for baseball in Algon quin and our entire area. "No doubt about it". Sincerest regards, Jerry Miller Dear Friend Jerry: When you wrote the message (last Thursday) there were still quite a few Cub fans around. Let's say the numbers were thinning -- but still there were some around. Here it is Tues day and hardly a sound do we hear. "No doubt about it." You Cubs are on the way. Honestly, Jerry, we feel ter rible about that Cub collapse. Can't stand to see grown men cry. Can't even stand to walk down the street and see grown men so grief stricken. Let's not give up. The season isn't over. "S.I.H." r From The Farm Corn, cattle and hog prices have improved sharply during the past year. Will the improve ments last? McHenry county farmers will learn price prospects at the 1969 McHenry County Outlook meeting. The Thursday, Sept. 18 meet ing will begin at 7 p.m., at the Woodstock VFW. Get tickets from any Livestock Feeder Di rector or from the Coopera tive Extension office. Larry Simerl, University of Illinois economist, will discuss the current and prospective Last Sunday was a perfect day for Soccer-weatherwise. Ideal both for watching and for playing, as was proven by the fact that there were many more spectators than usual at the McHenry American Legion Soc cer field to see the Wonder Lake Mustangs first home game of the fall league season. The Mustangs were holding the Juventus team >to a 2-1 score well into the latter part of the second half when the ball was kicked out of the goalie's hands into the goal - tying the score 2-2. It was an extremely exciting game right down to the last second. Next Sunday - Sept. 21 - the Wonder Lake team will play in Lincoln Park in Chicago against a worthy opponent named Red- White & Green. A bus has been chartered again for this game and if anyone is interested in going in to see the game please call Leo Hartog, Team manager at 815-653-7176 or the team coach A1 Van Berkum at 815- 385-8642 to be sure of a seat reservation. The bus will leave the McHenry American Legion clubhouse on Ringwood road at 1 p.m. On Sunday Sept. 28, the W.L. Mustangs will play at their home TUESDAY THIRTY-NINERS Frances Matchen 476; Nanci McAuliffe 184-465; Cammy Gaylord 451; Bev Day 193- 519; Jan Pieroni 214-527; Nan cy Blake 482; Dorothy Freund 462; Elsie Winkel 175-492; Bit- sy Schaefer 455; Fran Weyland 456; Mary Beth Fuchs 226-534. The two games following to finish up the fall league season will be played in Chicago. supplies of grains and livestock.. And he'll discuss domestic and foreign demand and their effects on future price trends. Warren Overman, of Inger- son, Layton & Compton Com mission firm, will discuss cur rent livestock marketing trends - along with outlook for the dressed beef trade. Robert Seegers, of Seegers Grain company, will give the complete trends in handling, drying and marketing of grain for farmers in today's trade channels. He'll give a few com ments on using futures. Joe Crabb, president of First State Bank of Harvard, will be the M.C. The second sports event which we were bugged out of was the Old Timer baseball game at Algonquin on Sunday. That would have been right down our alley. From way out in New Jer sey comes newspaper pictures of the "Amazin' Mets." Pasted on the first page was this note: "This year the Mets! Next year the Sox.' That's the old White Sox spirit, Tom. Wait 'til next year. Dear Friend Earl, We Cub fans would like you to know that we are still around and also to recall the fact that most pennant winners SUF FER at least one losing streak during the drive. Right?
