He served in the Marines for 3 years and was in Vietnam 3 times. While in Vietnam he was wounded once and when discharged he was a sergeant. He is presently employed in Marengo. Herman Freeman has lived in Lakemoor 12 years and at­ tended McHenry high school, from which he graduated in 1966. Village President Richard Hyatt states that this is achiev­ ing one more of his promises to improve police protection. LILYMOOR ASSOCIATION An officer's meeting was he'ld at Mr. Haines' home on Oct. 7, and the general meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Ryan home. LAKEMOOR WOMAN'S CLUB We hope everyone had a won­ derful summer vacation, and is eager to resume our meetings. Our first meeting will be held Oct. 8, at 8 p.m. at the fire- house. Hope to see as many as possible at our meeting. LADIES LEAGUE Held their regualr meeting Wednesday, and bunco was play­ ed. Prizes were won by Olive Corbett, Lou Gravenstuk, Jes­ sie Corbett and Florence Mix won the booby prize. The Indies League will hold its social meeting on Oct. 15. BAKE SALE AND WHITE ELEPHANT SALE Ladies League will hold a bake sale and white elephant sale on Nov. 1, at the fire- house starting at 1 p.m. Any donations will be greatly ap­ preciated, as proceeds go to­ ward the community building. SYMPATHIES Our deepest sympathies goto Mrs. Min Seeber on the death of her husband, Robert. BIRTHDAYS Sundae Morrison celebrated her seventh birthday on Oct. 1 with a family dinner party. Terry Morrison came home from college to celebrate his birthday at a family dinner on Oct. 5. RECEIVE WORD I received a very nice letter from Shirley Schuerr and fam­ ily. She says the weather is fine and likes Arizona very much. Pm sure Shirley would like to hear from all her friends. OPEN HOUSE FALL FESTIVAL AT ARBORETUM The Morton Arboretum's an­ nual fall festival open house will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 1 until 9:30 p.m. The day will include a variety of ac­ tivities to acquaint visitors with the facilities and programs of­ fered at the Arboretum. Events will center around the Thornhill building, located on the site of Joy Mortal's home on the west side of the grounds and the Arboretum center, lo­ cated on the east side. For the convenience of visitors, a shut­ tle bus will travel between these buildings at fifteen minute in­ tervals, also making stops at the Illinois Trees Trail, the Ev­ ergreen Trail, the Prairie Res­ toration, and at the Arbordale home landscape demonstration area. No admission will be charged for driving through the Arbor­ etum on Fall Festival day, and a special feature will be a ̂ elf- guided auto tour with guide booklets available at the gate­ houses. Chairmen are Mrs. Fred Rozum. schools, Woodstock; Mrs. Ralph Thomp­ son, clubs, Woodstock; Mrs. Tom McGuine, Huntley; Mrs. Ralph Levin, Marengo; Mrs. • Roland Herrmann, schools, Mc­ Henry; Mrs. Carl Bergstrom, clubs, McHenry; and Mrs. Mi­ chael Gannon, Crystal Lake, county education chairman for the McHenry county unit. More than 11,000 people in McHenry county saw cancer films or slides last year, 10,000 of them school children. More than 15,000 pieces of litera­ ture were distributed while fourteen physicians and forty- eight lay people gave programs for the education committee. The McHenry County American Cancer society unit strives to reach more groups this year for many cancers can be cured by early detection. In the case of tobacco, the aim is to educate as many young people as possible to the dan­ gers of tobacco, thus the motto, "Best Tip Yet--Don't Start." Inquiries about programs are invited to members of this com­ mittee. SHOP • MCHENRY: Looking over a new book which is being placed in each junior and senior high school and public library in McHenry county are Roy Habeck, Woodstock District 200 .superintendent, and Mrs. A.B. McConnell, Jr., member of the board of the McHenry county unit of the American Cancer society. ACS unit is placing the book, "Tobacco and Your Health: The Smoking Controversy" as an informative guide to both young people and adults. ACS films and materials are available for instruction in grades 4 through 12 part of the local unit's public service efforts to keep the public informed on how to whip cancer.
