Captain Charles Korus, our son-in-law, will be leaving for Thailand on Oct. 15 and our son Sp/5 Victor C. Freund will return to Korea Oct. 20. So we had a family reunion, the first time we have all been together since 1960. The grand children really got in the spir it of Christmas and enjoyed trimming the tree and giving out gifts and cards. To make it all a perfect day our Father Nicholas Freund celebrated a Mass in the home and we all participated. Most of them are from the area however some came from Cable, Wis., Monticello, 111., Chicago, Sko- kie, Wheeling. There was much reminicsing and visiting throughout the meal. We ask. too, that one in dividual not write on the same subject more than once each month. We reserve the right to delete any material which we consider libelous or in objectionable taste.) "Editor: "Another zoinig board meet ing pertaining to the proposed gravel pit on Bay road is com ing up Oct. 15. Hundreds of residents in our area are quite alarmed at the thought of an other pit plaguing our surround ings with noise, dust and traf fic. The fact that this will be operating fifteen to twenty years, and a pit much larger than the previous one (55 acres) makes us pause and take a good look at the matter. We are not against progress, but feel that this proposed operation will in terfere with our "domestic tranquility" a right stated in our Constitution. " We are opposed to the hun dreds of trucks that will be trav elling on Bay road (sometimes known as Big Hollow road). These trucks may be scheduled as often as three minutes apart, making a hazardous condition on a road that is narrow and full of curves and therefore already quite dangerous. Many people in our area have encountered cracked windshields and chips on their cars caused from loose or flying gravel. This condition can only increase with the added number of trucks. We are op posed to the dangers that may be encountered by the school busses transporting hundreds of area children to the schools in volved. "Many of us were not aware of the bogs and tamaracks in our surrounding countryside until the recent articles were published in the Waukegan News Sun. These bogs are known to Proclamation FRIDAY, OCT. IO, 1969 - PLAINDEALER - PG. 5 We can measure our annual fire loss in terms of immed iate suffering, death, and loss of homes, resources and money, and A large percentage of trag edy and loss can be prevented by eliminating fire hazards in those places where we live and work, and Professional and volunteer members of fire services and other public agencies can com bine their talents and efforts with those of our average cit izens for protection against this disastrous loss, and The approach to fire pre vention education shall be to secure fire safety through the development of skill, knowledge and respect for fire, Now, therefore, I , Richard B. Ogilvie, Governor of the State of Illinois, do hereby pro claim Oct. 5-11, 1969 as Fire Prevention Week in Illinois and I urge all government officials on the state and local levels to join us in a coordinated effort to provide effective fire pre vention programs. We are con cerned with the effect an oper ation this size will have on the bogs near the pit, which are closely related to the famous Yolo bog. It would seem waste ful to tamper with something that may endanger a countryside so rich in nature's blessing. It would seem shameful to bring an operation of this size into a tranquil, residential area. We owe it to ourselves to pre serve what we have. The zoning meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Mc Henry firehouse. It's up to all of us to appear there and show an interest in our area. "Lori Huml and the Con cerned Citizens Group" GRAVEL PIT CONTROVERSY " Open Letter to Pistakee Bay Residents and Surrounding Area: "Isn't it lovely in our*area now that the autumn is here? Summer is over, the chil dren are back in school and serenity has returned. Are you aware that we may be losing all of this to a gravel pit? The lovely bog area off of Bay road, rich in unusual plant- life and wildlife, may be af fected. Gone will be the sounds of birds and country quiet on Saturday mornings. "Instead, would you like the sounds of trucks shifting gears, the repulsive odor of diesel fuel, a washer and crusher pro cessing gravel and the squeal ing of brakes as cars attemp ting to pass trucks? (If a bill passes before the House, the trucks will be even bigger.) "It isn't a very pretty pic ture is it? In spite of what the opposition stated as to prop erty values, do you think you wouldn't have any trouble sell ing your house? Of course you would. No one wants all that noise and traffic. A zoning board meeting is being held Oct. 15 at the McHenry firehouse at 2 p.m. It is very important that everyone attend. Our love ly home sites and surroundings are at stake.
