\ Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 24, 1929) Oct. 21 was a day long to be remembered in the history of civilization as it marked the close of lights golden jubilee with celebrations and parades in many of our neighboring cities and towns. Scientists from all over the world gathered with Henry Ford, President Hoover and Thomas Alva Edison and radios of the world paused in their rounds of entertainment to pay tribute to the Ameri can who made radio possible, Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of the electric lamp. Our homes, stores and streets are now bright with electric lights, but there are many in our midst who can remember fifty years ago when the electric light was unheard of. Thirty-one states will change the color combination for auto mobile license in 1930. Illinois will have plates of white on black. The high school girls are now enjoying their basketball under the supervision of Miss Lil lian Doherty former Rosary college star. The girls have turned out in larger numbers than ever before. James Jensen, who lives on the Rich farm at McCullom Lake, sustained serious injur ies Monday evening when he was gored by an angry bull. Mr. Jensen was repairing a window in the barn when the bull en tered and rushed iq>on him be fore he was aware of its pre sence. He was gored against the wall of the barn and finally tossed through the stanchions by the infuriated beast. The unconscious man was found by the hired man. Adam Schillo, 72 years old, died at his home at Pistakee Bay. Mr. Schillo was a well known resident in this vicinity, having maintained a summer home at the Bay for many years. The excellent bouts at the An- tioch Palace drew their share of McHenry fight fans last Fri day night. Jimmy Fay of Mc- Henry turned in an impressive victory over yFrank Whiel of Chicago when he took the de cision in four rounds. TWENTY-FIVE YE^RS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 26, 1944) Oct. 28, the Ringwood chemical corporation will mark another step in its progress by laying the corner stone of a new office and laboratory build ing. This structure will provide working space for the plant of fice, a greatly enlarged re search laboratory and a com bination assembly and lunch room for the workers. The cor ner stone will contain auto graphed copies of the McHenry Plaindealer and other newspap ers, a list of employees, a copy of the honor roll, and the sig natures of these workers who had a part in the construction of the building. » Just recently, relatives re ceived word that Steve Harvey who has served in the Austral ian area for more than two years, was wounded for the sec ond time on July 29, on Biak Island, north of New Guinea. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 29, 1959) Members of the McHenry fire station were called to the Bilk- Miller second floor apartment' on Green street Saturday after- . noon when shorted electric, wires caused the entire house to be filled with smoke. There was • no actual fire damage, but wires throughout the home were burned. Fifty young people with hearty appetites were treated to supper / at the Community Methodist church, Supday evening, after collecting $287. 38 for United Nations International Chil dren's Emergency fund. The entire community was saddened by the passing ofRev. Fr. George Shark, who has ser ved St. Peter's church at Volo for forty-three years. He died in St. Therese hospital, Wau- kegan, Oct. 21, several hours after being found in a semi conscious condition in the church basement. He was 78 years old. A birthday dinner was given at the Eugene Oxtoby home at Ringwood last week for Mag nus Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. Frank G.Beck er of Riverside Drive announce the engagement of their daugh ter, Barbara Lynn, to Mr. Rob ert Bitterman of Lakemoor. A spring wedding is planned. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stil ling, who reside on the Pistakee Bay blacktop road, entertained at a family dinner last Thurs day. This was the first time the entire family had been together in two years. Rev. George Martin of the Community Methodist chui0i officiated Oct. ~4 at a service which united Mrs. Ccicudine Doran of McHenry and John Boehm of Woodstock. Mrs. Annabel Aicher was honored guest at a birthday luncheon at the home of Mrs. Harold Abbott of Woodstock re cently. Other guests were Miss Clara Miller, Miss Marion Mc- Omber and Mrs. Carl Bradley.
