STATE HIGH IN INCIDENCE OF ENCEPHALITIS Illinois ranked high for mos- quitO-carried encephalitis in the 1968 figures just released by the U.S. Public Health Ser vice last week. Arborviral encephalitis, as it is called, is carried from an imals, often horses and wild birds to man by mosquitoes. Illinois had twenty-three con firmed cases of the St. Louis variety of this illness. It is believed that many more cases actually occurred. This is a difficult disease to diagnose aS it appears like many other men ingitis-like illness. Only twelve other cases of this particular kind of illness were reported from all the rest of the states. Illinois had about 20 percent of all cases of mosquito-borne encephalitis and two-thirds of all cases of the St. Louis type.
