Morris of 4017 Seneca road, Wonder Lake, received the Navy Unit Com­ mendation during ceremonies aboard the hospital ship USS Sanctuary off the coast of Viet­ nam. The commendation was pre­ sented to the officers and men of the hospital ship by the Commander of the U.S. Sev­ enth Fleet in recognition of Sanctuary's exceptionally mer­ itorious service from April of 1967 to April of this year. The Secretary of the Navy cited the white-hulled ship for her service while providing highly responsive hospital ship services to American and allied forces ashore. The historic old school re­ tains its quaint charm to the passerby, at the same time providing up-to-date furnish­ ings and equipment for the ed­ ucational needs of 1969. W ithout doubt, Sunday's open house brought to mind a var­ iety of memories, the most recent of which were those dim days in which the 1894 school almost went the way of many old structures. The persistence of many who loved the school and the priceless memories it holds in the educational history of McHenry, was all that saved the old edifice. Fresh from a recent scrub­ bing, it presents a proud face , once again as it welcomes youngsters within its sturdy frame. With each passing day, there are many who feel grate­ ful that this one small corner of McHenry's growing muni­ cipality remains unchanged. Members of District 15 board of education, who have devoted countless hours in time and en­ ergy for this transformation, deserve congratulations! m^ Apathy is the characteristic st often attributed to the American public when men and women of conviction get to­ gether to analyze why some of the country's big problems- -the solvable ones --go unsolved. More often than not, when questioned, the individual will answer, "What can one per­ son do?' In spite of repeated proddings to "let your senator or congressman know how you feel,' only a handful take the time and interest to carry through. Most of them believe sincerely that it will do very little good. One young man, formerly of McHenry, felt differently about a particular situation recently. He made the issue a personal one at first, then enlisted the interest of many others -- and something was done. Sgt. Mickey Goodfellow, a 1965 graduate of McHenry high school and son of Mr. and Mrs. W illiam H. Fischer of 2406 W. Mehring, McHenry, decided not to participate in the anti-war moratorium in mid-October. The young serviceman, who resides with his wife and young daughter in Oklahoma City, went to work as usual at Tinker Air Force base and at home he flew the American flag. Goodfellow now runs a com­ puter at the base. He has ser­ ved his country for four years and four months, a year of that time in Vietnam, and expects to be discharged next January. The sergeant, to demonstrate "what one man could do to show support for his President and the troops overseas", called the newspaper to suggest that people who felt the way he did fly the flag from their homes and autos that day. He contacted the Mayor, his Senator, the Veterans of For­ eign Wars and the American Le­ gion. Then he dropped by the Chamber of Commerceofficeto get the names of civic organize ations and proceeded to call the presidents. The one-man campaign paid off in a large display of flags in Oklahoma City in mid-Oc­ tober. Sgt. Goodfellow's plans for further support In November have not been disclosed, al­ though he suggested that the flag be flown until a cease-fire or truce is declared. Sgt. Goodfellow has proved one thing -- that the common man can get results if he has the interest, the enthusiasm, the time and the energy to enlist others of similar persuasion.
