PLAINDEALER PHOTO McHenry Soph Cagers Win Pair Of Games by Bert Hagemann t Coach Bill Blankenhorn's sophomore basketball squad started off the season with a bang this past weekend as they defeated Grant 48-42, and routed Antioch 70-36. The young Warriors, behind the consistent shooting of Ron Miller and Mark Hoffman, and the strong board work of Carey Fenner and Don Prazak had a real battle on their hands against Grant. The game was actually won at the charity stripe where the War riors hit 20 of 30, but the rugged Bulldogs never let up on the pressure and forced the orange and black to hustle all the way to pull off the win. Against Antioch it was the same cast of characters doing their thing, only they did it much better as McHenry buried the Sequoits early and kept them there with a combination of torrid shooting and air tight defense. The War riors were never really chal lenged after the first quarter, now its three games this week end in the Lake Zurich tourna ment for the young Warriors. They'll have to work hard to keep their streak alive. The two games contrasted sharply in so far as the orange and black fans were concerned as Mc Henry looked like two differ ent teams during the two con tests. Against the always tough Bulldogs, the Warriors looked like an inept group of grade schoolers as last year's buga boo, scoring, led to their de mise. The senior dominated Grant squad, led by forwards Pinkowski and Bereiter, con sistently swished the nets from the baseline as they built up a commanding third quarter lead and where never threatened afterwards. Coach Ken Lud wig played musical chairs as he revolved the Warrior players in and out in an attempt to find a five-some which could score consistently, but to no avail. The sky high Warriors never did find the range from the floor, and couple this with 16 turnov ers and you have the story of defeat number one in this season. But as poorly as Mc Henry played at Fox Lake, the story reversed itself the next evening in Buckner gym. The orange and black start ed slowly once again against the rangy Sequent ball club, but late in the second quarter McHenry began to jell, and a big outburst in the third stanza ran the Antioch quintet off the floor and gave the Warriors an easy victory. The big third quarter outburst was triggered by the red hot shooting of Mike Freund and Mike Weingart, and a tenacious full court press which made the Sequoits cough up the ball repeatedly. Behind the defensive heroics of Tom Hurckes, Gary Fairchild, and Kurt Knaack, the Antioch five committed many of their 30 turnovers during this period. When coach Ludwig rested this scrappjugroup at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Jim Heard came to life on the boards and chipped in some timely baskets. The pressure was kept up with captain Mike Morenz and Don Smith aiding the cause. Game scoring honors went to the big Antioch center Bolton who had 25 points, andFreundand Wein gart led the Warrior attack wijth 17 and 16 points respectively. These two opening contests gave some indication of just what kind of squad we will have here this year. For one thing, McHenry has some depth at all positions. Our defense looked respectable even in defeat Friday night, and the full court press and resulting fast breaks showed promise of better things to come. To this reporter it looks like the War riors will have to scrap on defense all over the court and run whenever possible to over come what at times is mediocre shooting. To any basketball fan who saw the game Saturday ' there is no doubt that the Warriors will not be pushovers this year, and any team which conquers them will have to outhustle and outdefense us. We journey to Lake Zurich this weekend for a three game ser ies in the Lake Zurich hol iday tournament. We play one game Friday and a pair Satur day, so if you've a mind, why not give the orange and black a look see against the likes of rug ged Lake Zurich, St. Joseph, and Wauconda.
