DEC. 10, 1969 Warriors Nip North In Last Two Seconds. by Bert Hagemann The Warriors and the War- hawks of North Chicago locked up in a defensive struggle of tremendous proportions last Friday night with the orange and black squeaking out a last second 43-41 victory. McHen- ry abandoned its fast break run and shoot offense and mat ched North Chicago at its own game in a slowed down, deliber ate type of offensive show. The ball game saw the lead see saw back and forth through out the contest, and with less than a minute to go, the War riors were in arrears, 41-40. Gary Fairchild, the squads leading rebounder, dropped in a charity toss to knot the srore, and the stage was set for a Merriwell like finish. With less than 30 seconds to play, the Warhawks brought the ball up court only to lose possession when their great defensive forward Thompson was charged with an offensive violation to give McHenry the ball. The Warriors first work ed for a shot in close to center Jim Heard, but when that passing lane was blocked, Mc Henry worked the ball around the key down into the corner where senior forward Mike m !»3 on all accounts Beginning January 1,1970 n 0% H M McHENRY SAVINGS & LOAN ASSOCIATION MEMBER Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation Federal Home Loan Bank System Savings and Loan Foundation United States Savings and Loan League Illinois Savings and Loan League New 5X % 6-Month $1,000 Certificates Interest on our Savings Certificates is paid quarterly. Green Street, McHenry, Illinois 60050 Phone: 385-3000 Weingart was waiting. With two seconds remaining on the clock, Weingart let fly with a twenty footer that hit nothing but the bottom of the twine and the War riors had their first victory over North Chicago in three years. Weingart capped another high scoring evening with some good board work, and his front line mates, Fairchild and Heard, did a good job on both boards. The W arrior press did not turn the ball over very of ten until the waning minutes of the contest when Gary Fairchild made two key interceptions, but it was effective in that it provided the needed harass ment. McHenry beat a very quick team Friday night. The War- hawk defense as susal is ter rific, but their lack of a con sistent scorer will hurt them as the season progresses, al though their super-soph, Cole man, will eventually be a great basketball player. This Friday we face the Cardunals of Dun dee on our home court. As usual, any team coached by Johnny Paul will be tough to handle. Hope you can make it out that evening, the Warrriors will give you a good show, no doubt. Vet Scholarships May Be Used In Junior Colleges State veterans' scholarships may be used at public junior colleges for the first time this fall, as a result of broadenii^ of the scholarship program by the General Assembly. The scholarships will pay tuition and come fees, accord ing to Robert Popovich, dean of student services, at McHenry County college. Formerly the scholarships could be used only at public senior colleges or universities. Popovich said the scholar ships may be used to pay tu ition for any kind of instruc tion offered at the public jun ior colleges. Veterans may take only one or two courses or a full program. He cautioned that the scholarships are good only for a four-year period, no mat ter whether the veteran takes a part time program of stud ies or a full time program. Basically, in order to be el igible for the scholarships, a veteran must have served in the Armed Forces during World War I or any time after Sept. 16, 1940, and must have served for at least one year, unless he was discharged because of a service connected disability. He must have received an honor able discharge. A veteran must have been a resident of Illinois when he entered service, or at least six months prior to enlistment or induction. An individual who was a student at an Illinois pub lic college or university when he entered service also would be eligible. Applications are available from the office of financial aids at the college. Big Jim Heard, under the watchful eye of Coach Ken Ludwig, puts in a practice session of free throws as the Warriors pre pare for their conference home opener against Dundee. The Warriors are 1-0 in the North Suburban after their 43-41 vic tory over North Chicago last week, and 5-1 in all games. After dropping their first gkme of the season to Grant of Fox Lake, McHenry has a string of five victories. Support our mighty Warriors Friday night as they take on Dundee at West campus. PLAINDEALER PHOTO SPORTS im* Sophomores Continue Win Streak In Warhawk Game by Bert Hagemann The Warrior sophomore squad ran its record to a per fect 6-0 mark this past Fri day night with a narrow, 54-48 victory over the always tough Warhawks. In arrears 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, Mc Henry roared back to take the lead on the strength of a six teen point second stanza and rere never headed thereafter in hard fought battle. Leading the Warrior scoring was Mark Hoffman, followed by some bal anced scoring from Rick Coo per, Ron Miller, and Carey Fenner who 4lso topped the squad with ten rebounds. Don Prazak did his usual yeoman work on the boards, and the Mc Henry defense as a whole was tough. The Warrior shooting percentage from the floor was once again quite high at 43%, and our scoring opportunities were well earned as the.ten acious Warhawk defense gave the orange and black some real h e a d a c h e s p e r i o d i c a l l y through the game. The little Warriors looked respectable once again in winning their six th straight, and coach Bill Blankenhorn can look forward to getting his ball club up and keeping them there as we wind our way toward holiday tour nament time.
