PLAINDEALER PHOTO The McHenry County Tuber culosis associationplays a very active role to insure the good health of the residents of Mc Henry county. 44 All of our ac tivities are directed toward im proving and maintaining good health for everyone," said Mr. M. Kendall Bird, president of the association. "Of course, a primary con cern to us is the eradication and control of tuberculosis, by far McHenry county's number <Jne infectious disease killer." Mr. Bird went on to say, "As the incidence of TB subsides, we are devoting more and more of our efforts to other respir atory diseases." Emphysema, a disease re lated to cigarette smoking, that takes more and more lives ev ery year - 1,134 in 1968 - is of prime concern to the Mc Henry County TB association. Also among the list of respir atory diseases that they focus attention on are asthma, chron ic bronchitis, influenza, pneu monia, pleurisy and hay fever. A great deal of effort is also spent encouraging school chil dren and adults not to smoke. The TB-RD association has found that air pollution is also a cause of several of the res piratory diseases and they are, therefore, taking an active role towards cleaning up the air. The Christmas Seal agency's activities include health educa tion in schools; promoting TB detection programs; funding un iversity research grants and in forming doctors and nurses a- bout respiratory diseases. Con tributions to Christmas Seals also provide programs for cleaner air; asthmatic and em physema breathing clinics and smoking education in the schools. These are just a few of the many activities of the McHenry County Tuberculosis associ ation. Of course it takes a great deal of money to operate these programs and all funds come from contributions to the an nual Christmas Seal campaign, which to date has reached a to tal of $20,263.10. The goal for the 1969 campaign is $35,000, which is the amount needed to support these programs. The association is also urging ev eryone to increase his contri bution this year to make pos sible the replacing of the mo bile x- ray equipment and trailer which will cost $25,000.
