Swimmers Win First Meet In Warrior History by Bert Hagemann Coach Dick Eberhardy*s ua-men tasted the sweet taste victory for the first timethis st week as they squashed Har lem of Kockford by the score of HI-13. Juniors Ken Macdonald Elgin Team Sinks Warrior Swimmers by Bert Hagemann A strong P.lgin swimming team defeated a game, but underman ned Warrior squad this past week by the score of 79-16. The Elgin squad, which was eighth in the state meet last year, dominated just about ev ery event except diving, which was won by McHenry*s Neil Roberts. In defeat however, the Warriors did set some more personal records as they once again lowered some of their times below those set in the previous season. New Warrior records included a 2:04.8 in the 200 yard medley relay by Eschner, Lrghtner, Macdonald, and Harvey; a 26.5 in the 50 yard free style by Harvey, and a 1:10.4 in the 100 yard back stroke by Phillips. The400 yard freestyle team also set a rec ord of 4:24.5 in their event, with I- agan, Marcellis, Phillips, and Stark doing the honors. The junior varsity team lost by a score of 74-21, but they also set three j-v records in the following events: 50 yard freestyle, Kick Berndt, 100 yard backstroke, Kick Swanson, and 100 yard breaststroke, Kevin Carroll. The VVrriors next swim meet is next Tuesday at home against DeKalb. c ^and Bill Harvey accounted for 28 points between them as Mac donald won the 200 yard indivi dual medley and the 100 yard butterfly, and Harvey garnered first place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle. Other individual first place finishes were counted b\ •>tark in the 200 yard freestyle, Berndt in diving, Phillips in the 100 yard backstroke, Stark in the 400 yard freefctyle, and Lightner in the 100 yard breast- stroke. Both W atfrlor relay teams also won, so |^was truly a smashing victory, and cer tainly a great win forthe squad. The frosh-soph squad also won their meet, by a score of 60-30 as they dominated the opposition almost as much as the varsity did. Kevin Carroll set a new frosh-soph record of 1:22.5 in the 100 yard breast- stroke, and the 200 yard medley relay team of Eschner, Carroll,. Kane, and Tiggemann set a new record of 2:17.7. This Hruly had to be a fine day for Coach Eberhardy and his hard working swimmers. When you go one and a half year* without a team win ytm have to work quite hard to keep your chin up and keep working hard rrfg^t in and night out during practice. Evidently the toil and long practice ses sions are beginning to bear fruit however, perhaps we can look forward to some more suc cesses this year as the War riors do battle tMs next week in the home H20 against De Kalb on Tuesday. Sauk Valley Trims McHenry County College Cage Team The McHenry County Cagers played host to the Sauk Valley Redmen from Sterling this past Saturday night, Dec. 6. The Mc Henry five scored eighty-eight points and eighty-eight points should be enough to win most games, but the generous hosts from McHenry gave up 113 points as they lost their fifth game in six encounters. Aside from being the perfect hosts the F ighting Scots didn't do much else right. They fell behing ear ly in the game and trailed 56 to 44 by half time. One of the few bright spots in the picture was the scoring of Gary Kutchik who tallied 26 points in his first starting role. John Mulvenna was the only other Scot hitting the basket with any regularity as he threw in 27 counters. The team did shoot well at the charity line as they converted 28 out of 37 free throw at tempts for a 76% average, high for the vear. This week the McHenry County lads will undoubtedly find themselves working very hard on defense in practice trying to get ready to hold down Illinois V alley, last year's W es tern Division chaippions. The local five travels to LaSalle for that contest on Wednesday night, Dec. 10. Saturday, Dec. 13, the Scots have an afternoon encounter on the South Side as they take on the University of Chicago Frosh-Soph., squad at 2:30 p.m. Favored State Champs Defeat MCHS Wrestlers McHenry high school wrest ling team suffered its first de feat of the season last Fri day night at the West campus gym. This time it isMrs.FredFeltz. She was a fine and gracious lady. Just the whiff of her home made bread was enough to go right to the heart of a man. Mrs. Feltz was a religious woman with faith in God and kindness toward her fellow man. To top it off we have an invitation to a big spread two days after Christmas. Haven't been bitten by the Christmas spirit, but it began to catch up to us Monday night as we joined the Senior Cit izens in a real jolly party. People in that group don't just sit and rock. They are active and alert. Christmas music usually gets us. You kids can have your boop-a-doop stuff. W e are wait ing for Bing Crosby to sing, "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas".
