WED., DEC. 17, 1969 - PLAINDEALER PG. 12 fto, it's not a space-age wine cellar but ^operating produc tion unit of the new Rubella vaccine at the Weit Point, Pa., plant of Merck Sharp and Dohme. The racks are motorized to ro tate the bottles slowly. McHenry county kindergarten through third grade students will be vaccinated in an all-out rub-out effort to •Whip rubella and avoid an epidemic during the week of Jan. 19.. 1,000 Children Jo Be Vaccinated yAgainst Rubella Gratifying response from school officials has boosted the Estimated total number of chil dren to be vaccinated in the rubella all-out rub-out cam paign to almost 11,000! "I am pleased by the quick response from schools through out McHenry county," Phil Wertz, county chairman of the March of Dimes and one of the organizations spearheading the Vaccination program in the county during mid-January, said this Week. ;; "This cooperation will help in the fight to prevent birth de fects. After the first of Jan uary, superintendents will have complete instructions and they will be provided with letters and permit forms to send to par ents of children in kindergar ten through third grades." Meanwhile, Ward Duel, ad ministrator for the McHenry County Health department, says the widespread response util izes the 10,000 doses alloted to McHenry county by the Ill inois State Department of Health in this emergency program. He is seeking additional vac cine to handle the participants over 10,000 and anticipates he will be able to fulfill all needs. The 11,000 total is based on classroom estimates provided by phone when school officials called. When more formal preparations are completed, an exact number of children in the qualifying age group will be known. Duel said virtually all dis tricts -public and parochial- have responded affirmatively to the call for participation. He expressed appreciation to members of the press in Mc Henry county for their print ing and broadcasting this im portant health message to the public during the past three weeks. Scope of the response indicates public awareness of the need to exercise prudence in the fight to whip rubella- caused birth defects. The Men's Tie Foundation says that women still buy 61 per cent of the neckties worn by men, mostly as gifts. How ever, the industry is making more ties now for the mascu line taste because previously it had been thought that wo men bought almost all of men's ties.
