McHenry Warriors Pick A Pair, Down Streaks. And Mustangs b\ Bert Hagemann In Vietnam this year it is the year of the pig; in McHenry this year it is beginning to look a lot like the year of the round- ball. The streaking McHenry Warriors blasted yet two more opponents this past weekend as they downed the "struggling Blue Streaks of Woodstock, 69 to 51, *3 •Twas the night before Christmas and we were chased upstairs to bed a little earlier than usual. 'EARL WALSH SO I HEAR -SPORTS EDITOR J and edged the rugged Mustangs of Mundelein, 76 to 61. Friday's conference victory enabled the orange and black to remain in a first pla\ tie with the high ly touted XeeBees of /ion Ben- ton, while Saturday's win ran the Warriors season record to8-1. In Friday night's contest, the Warriors were slow to work up a head of steam, but in the second quarter, with the infu sion of guard Tom Hurckes and forward Mike Morenz, into the line-up, the Warrior jugger- naught began to pick up speed, and McHenry won going away in the second half. Woodstock re mained in the ball game as long as they did on the fine outside gunnery of senior guard Gene Stoddard who captured game scoring honors with 16 tallies. Santa Claus didn't arrive un til C hristmas morning in those days. Rather, he came down our chimney during the night to leave gifts for all good boys and girls. We awoke early the next morning and scooted down those stairs like wild Indians. It was a little on the cold side in the parlor (sometimes known as the front room), but young blood surged through our veins and a little cold wasn't noticed. The parlor used to be closed in the dead of winter because the old base burner couldn't heat the whole house. Folding doors closed off the parlor and rag rugs were stuffed into the space under the doors. When our father got the fire place going, just the sight of the dancing flames would make you feel warm. Fortified with at least a big bowl of oaLmeal, we walked a mile to church. Everybody went to the church of their choice. With the Methodist church only a short block from our house, we sometimes wondered why our parents made us walk a mile to the old St. Patrick's on Court Street. The years moved along and we planned Christmas for our own children. It was the most fun while there was still a San ta in their lives. Now there are grandchildren to plan for and watch as Christ mas unfolds. We still thrill to see Santa in action, but are not unmind ful of the true meaning of Christmas. Each of us thrills at some celebration of our own birth date. Everybody must find some thrill at thoughts of the greatest birthday of all. How Santa ever got down our chimney with that sack over his shoulder was of no concern. We didn't question anything. The tree wasn't there when we went to bed. Now it was standing in all its majesty in the corner -- standing in a big pail of sand. Bricks kept it from tipping. It is a grand and glorious time of the year. All paths of ac tivity throughout the year lead toward this great day. The spirit of friendliness and good will reaches such a pitch that it couldn't possibly last all year. Too bad more of it doesn't hang on longer. Tree branches held real can dles that only our mother could light. We could look, not touch. There weren't too many decor ations on the tree, but popcorn was strung and circled around and around. We love those Christmas cards and greetings. Each one is read carefully and we feel just a little closer to those who remembered. The McHenry Warriors have used constant pressure against their opponents this year. We hope and pray that San ta will spread joy to each home in his own jolly way. We also hope and pray that the Good Lord will give you and us strength to meet all challenges. MERRY CHRISTMAS is not just a worn out greeting. We mean it. by Bert Hagemann Coach Ken Ludwig's success ful roundballers will enter com petition in the rugged Batavia Holiday tournament this com ing Friday when they take on Geneva in the ffrst game of the tourney. The ball game begins at 7 p.m. in the Bat avia gym as the Warriors will open up the tournament compe tition. Other teams in the same bracket are Morris and Benet, and the pairings below will show how the teams will advance whether they win or lose. If McHenry remains red hot their chances for a trophy appear good, so let's get out and support the orange and black. I'm sure the howling hundred will be there, why not join them? Game No. 5 Monday, Dec. 29 . 2:00 P.M. Game No. 9 Tuesday, Dec. 30 CONSOLATION Stoddard's long distance artil lery attack kept the game close until midway in the second quar ter w hen McHenry started to run and get the ball to the open man underneath. Gary Fairchild and Mike Weingart paced the W ar riors during this sprint, with captain Mike Morenz also chip ping in some key buckets. Af ter intermission, McHenry built its lead up slowly and method ically, and coach Ken Ludwig began substituting freely with four minutes remaining in the contest. Saturday night's ball game however, was a different type contest than that played on Friday night. McHenry broke fast from the gate in the non-conference tilt against the hard rebounding Mustfcfigs, and behind some bal anced scoring, the Warriors raced to a eight to ten point edge which they held through out the half. Mundelein's fine one-two punch of senior Seeds and sophomore Boothe kept the Mustangs within firing distance however, as McHenry went to the dressing room at halftime with a 9 point bulge. The Mun delein ball club refused to give up however, and gradually chip ped away at the McHenry lead until with about four minutes re maining in the fourth quarter, McHenry found themselves with a bare four point lead and the op position under a full head of steam. After a time out to re group, McHenry stormed back and buried the Mustangs under an avalanche of points, keyed by a nagging press and some fine fast break opportunities. Once again, as with previous wins, the Warrior rebounders, led by senior Gary Fairchild, Mike Morenz, and Jim Heard swept the glass to trigger the orange and black offense. Scor ing honors for the two games were quite evenly divided as is evidenced by the accompanying box scores. The two big wins were in the mold cast by the Warriors so far this season; bench strength and defense. Squad depth in the back court with Smith, _ Freund, and Hurckes, coupled with front, the line skills of Knaack, Heard, Fairchild, Morenz, and Wein gart spelled WIN for the War riors as the appreciative howling hundred and their gar bage can were on hand to urge their charges on to victory. The Warriors go into action this coming Friday in Batavia against the Geneva ball club, game time is seven bells, hope you can make it. CONFERENCE STANDINGS W L 1. McHenry 3 0 2. Zion Benton 3 0 3. WINTERING SALMON FOUND , Fishing technicians of the Ill inois Department of Conserva tion found coho salmon and trout near the shore of Lake Michigan during investigations this fall and winter. Salmon have been present in the Illinois portion of the lake from March through July over the past several years but this is the first winter that the fish have been found in any number. Ev idently the adult salmon were stocked in streams flowing into the lake in other states and have not been able to find their way back to their parent streams, William Harth, superintendent of the fisheries division, said. 23 15 16 61 McHenry - Shooting % 69-30 equals 43%.
