The students enrolled in these cour ses will be instructed in the un usual conditions; that will be in existence during a time like this, such as sanitation, food preparation, effects of radia tion, etc. At the conclusion of the four- week courses the students will be combined for an over-night stay in a shelter. IKitcanis News WONDER LAKE CLUB Art Lau brought in an ed itorial recently on "Marijuana" which appeared in the Forbes magazine. With one of Kiwanis* international prime objectives to alert both youths and parents on drug usage, Mr. Lau wrote for permission to use this as an expression of the feeling of the Kiwanis club. WHY KEEP LETTING THE GRASS GROW? "isn't it about time-in fact, long past time-that a top team of medicine men and social sci entists make a comprehensive study of marijuana, a study not spurred by an older gen eration's horror or fear, but a study aimed at finding out the facts? . "If 400,000 young people can gather on a farm for three days in pouring rain to sit in the mud listening to the Sounds of their generation, with most of them, according to every report I read, stoned on pot, we'd better find out for sure what if s all about. "Increasing the penalties and enacting a federal law, as now proposed, imposing a man datory two-year jail sentence for even having marijuana on the person is hardly the ans- wer-unless ifs accompanied by an appropriation for hundreds of millions of dollars for the jails to hold a sizable percen tage of our nation's youth* "Instead of a completely pun itive approach to the matter, which hasn't worked at all, let us try to find out the facts. If it can be established beyond medical dispute that smoking marijuana does real and last ing physical harm to » person, including destructive mental ef fects, then I think the spread of the drug would lessen and its use would begin todiminish. "This seems to be happening with LSD, where the word among many young people is that too often "bad trips" make it dan gerous. They are increasingly convinced among themselves and by themselves that ifs not worth it. "Let's take time out from hurling laws and penalties from our side of the Generation Gap and together see if we cannot find out some answers. "Until we do, it would seem the use of riiarijuana will keep growing at a foster rate than we can build prisons." The Dundee club will host a ladies' night on Jan. 27. The lo cal club will make an inter-club visit with Dundee. Lt. Gov. Howard Deittrick will make his official visit to the Wonder Lake club Feb. 2. Bill and Shirley Cristy will head the bowling sweepstake* to be held in April. The Jan. 19 program will be presented by Tom Mathews, with color slides on his re cent trip to Hawaii. He attended the farm and land brokers con vention there and was able to get back into the rural area not always seen by the average tourist. - WINTER CONCERT The Chicago Chamber or chestra's eighteenth annual winter concert series will com mence Sunday, Jan. 18, at 3:30 p.m. in the main auditorium of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. In honor of the Ludwig van Beethoven bicen tennial being celebrated this year (1770-1970), the thirty- piece musical ensemble, under the baton of Dieter Kober, will perform one work by the great German master in each of the four concerts comprising the series.
