\ ; V " -H | If* r jm.m l£: X v • ?G. 16 - PLAINDEALER - WED. JANUARY 14,1770 CUB PACK 131 Blue and Gold time is here again. The date has been set for Sunday, Feb. 15. Within the next few days each mother will be contacted to get the number of people expected to attend. After that the menu will be worked out and the boys will get busy making center pieces and place mats. , This month re-registration money is due, when each Scout pays for his 1970 membership. The money should be in the hands ^of the den mothers by the pack meeting, Jan'. 15. One face that will be missed at the pack meeting is that of Ray Bellon, faithful Webelo lea der. He is recovering from sur gery at McHenry hospital. While he is (getting well, A1 Potter is assuming the entire respon sibility of the Webelos. This is quite a large group of boys and he sure could use some help at the meetings on Mon day at 7:30. Don't forget the coupons be ing collected for the Kidney foundation. The proceeds will be used for Kidney disorder de tection for the children of Ill inois so our own kids will ben efit. There will be a large con tainer at the pack meeting for all the coupons saved during the holiday baking and snacking. The 1970 Pinewood derby will . be held at the March pack meeting. The den mothers will soon be getting the kits to the boys so they, along with their dads, can start work on the winning car. The next few months are the busiest both iri the dens and the pack. Blue and Gold, the Pine- wood derby, and Scout-O- Kama all take a lot of organization, cooperation, and, most of all, parent participation. Everyone fias &ouen well acquainted since the fall and friendships have been made both oh the parent level and Scout level. Now, with a little work, the coming activities should really be fun for all. CALL 385-0170 NOW Accelerate ) Campaign To Stop Smoking The American Heart assoc iation, of which the Illinois Heart Association is an affil iate, is accelerating its cam paign to encourage Americans to quit smoking-this time by showing and telling them how to do it. The Heart association has been conducting an anti-cigar- ette educational campaign for years, based on scientific ev idence that cigarette smoking speeds the development of cor onary artery disease and in creases the risk of heart at tack. That evidence is strong er than ever, according to the 1969 Report to Congress by the Public Health Service, citing studies over the past year. Now, a "How to Stop Smoking" program has been built around five half hour films developed by WOR-TV in New York, and a similarly-titled 8-page leaflet produced by the AHA. These are being made available to affiliates of the Heart association, the Amer ican Cancer society and the Na tional Tuberculosis and Res piratory Disease association, to augment current educational and informational programs in their own areas. The film series features Dr. Donald T. Fredrickson, a na tionally-known figure on smok ing withdrawal, a panel of twen ty-three smokers, and former participants in smoking with drawal clinics who have told audiences how they stopped smoking. The leaflet may be used independently or by view ers as a step-by-step guideline in conjunction with the film series. w The withdrawal program has specific rules to follow, in cluding a cigarette test to help identify the type of smoker a > person is, instructions for keeping a cigarette tally, means of evaluating smoking behavior and measures to take toward a pattern of non-smoking. The films strive to include the viewer as an active par ticipant, help him or her to analyze" smoking habits and teach how to unlearn a condi tioned behavior. Each program leads to another step toward withdrawal. The pocket-sized leaflet de veloped by the Heart associa tion covers the same instruc tion as the film series. The leaflet explains how to build motivation for withdrawal, ways of cutting down the number of cigarettes smoked and how to finally overcome the habit. Other anti-cigarette ma terials available from Heart associations include such Pam phlets include "Cigarette Smoking and Cardiovascular Diseases," "What To Tell Your Parents About Smoking," "Smoking And Heart Disease," MILK LOSS PROTECTION Dairy farmer members of As sociated Milk Producers, Inc. all will be protected from milk market losses resulting from natural disasters, effective im mediately. Action to approve these benefits and the seating of two new members on the AMPI board of directors were taken at the regular meeting of the board Thursday, Jan. 8, in the St. Anthony hotel at San Antonio, Tex. The two direc tors were Henry Grooter, San born, Iowa, and Gerritt Rensink, Ashton, Iowa. & UP Sale Wed, Thurs-Fri-Sat.
