Coach Ken Lud- wig*s charges won the battle of the boards which was fierce ly fought, along with winning the game to stay tied for first place in the rugged North Sub urban race. The Warriors roar ed out to a comfortable 10-14 point lead midway through the second period and were never headed afterwards as McHenry repeatedly hit from outside to keep their cushion intact. The Warrior lead in the first half was the result of some line outside shooting by senior forward Mike Weingart, and some good inside work by Jim Heard and three year veteran Gary Fairchild. With these irontliners holding ttpir own against the huge Tiger front line, the backcourt tandem of Don Smith and Tom Hurckes was making life miserable for WARRIORS puround the (ame last i» ARE NO. 1 -- The McHenry Warrior bench gathers team during a time-out in the McHenry-Crystal Lake Friday night. The Warriors play Libertyville here Friday night. i' With snow on the ground and £i skiing season actively un- rway, we should begin our ex planation and discussion of technique. In the beginning, the student should accustom hlm- to the unfamiliar feel of i pair of skis by simply put- wig them on and walking around. should oe perfected so mat toe skier can walk up small hills Md around obstacles. This will bftild confidence and develop the balance that is required be fore the beginner can challenge larger hills. £The next plateau that we must rtrive for is the ability to dDmb uphill. This basic man euver must be mastered be fore the first downhill run can fcfe made. Climbing is not only at; method of getting uphill txft if is also a valuable exercise if, edge control. However, be fore we talk about climbing apy further we must define a. few technical terms. CFall line -- The path a snow ball would take as it rolls down t$e hill. ••Edging -- To place the ski itf such a position so that only tljte bottom edge bites or en gages the snow. tin preparation to the climb, skis must be placed at angles to, or directly a- cnoss, the fall line. This will iitsure that as the skier is pro gressing up the hill, he will not slide forward or backward. When the skis are perpendic ular to the fall line, the up hill ski and the uphill pole are raised. A step is taken side ways up the hill and the ski is positioned so the uphill edge coops a small step into the hill. ;After the skier has pro gressed far enough up the hill, hj should place both poles in tt£ snow on the downhill side. They should be sufficiently far enough downhill to allow the tips o£the skis to swing around so they can be pointed straight downhill. Once the skis have as- sifcned this position, the skier is; ready for the first beginning moving maneuver - the downhill naming position. £The downhill running posi tion is used for developing and improving balance while sliding downhill. The maneuver is ex ecuted as follows: the skis arc pointed straight down the hill. Tbey are a comfortable dis tance apart. The weight is equally distributed between both skis. The knees and ankles are fhtly flexed while the upper is erect. Once this po- has been attained, the are taken out and the skier slide downhill. The only Tiger that was not dec la wed in the contest was burly forward Greg Schafer who dumped in 22 points to lead all scorers. The Warriors put 4 men in double figures as the orange and black once again featured a well tuned, balanced scoring attack. The margin of victory could have been even greater if the Warriors had managed any respectability from the charity „ stripe, but an eight for twenty- nine effort there kept McHen ry from really pulling away and turning the contest into a rout. This reporter saw the game hinge on a couple of very important factors. The War riors held their own under the glass in some very heavy traf fic, they hit from out. and their defense was very little short of superb. These are the factors which make winners and they are the major rea sons that our record now stands 4-0 in conference, and 10-2 overall for the seaidn. This weekend will see yet another severe test for the or ange and black as we tangle with the rugged Cats of Liberty ville at home Friday night, and then journey to the chilly lake front to take on co-leader Zion Benton in the battle of the ti tans. Last year's champion Cats are the surprise of the league so far this season as they have proved mighty tough even though suffering severe graduation losses. Their fine guard Gos- sfell should prove a real chal lenge for our backcourt defen sive specialists, and their front line is formidable enough. On Saturday night nothing really has to be said. The Zee-Bees are loaded, plain and simple, and their run and shoot of fense will be a real match for anyone this year. I think we will find out this weekend just what stuff these exciting Warriors are made of. See you there. Harry said they used to flip a bobsled near the river bridge, ride across town to the Farmers' Mill, then flip another sled back. That went on all day Saturday. Those were the days when all the farmers and their wives came to town on Saturday. They brought in a crate of eggs and traded them for supplies. Harry remembered that some drivers speeded up so the kids took a tumble when getting off the runners. He may also re member that some drivers swung long whips to keep the kids off their sleds. Those were the days before snowmobiles. 1. Glad we saw the Warrior- Crystal Lake basketball game Friday night. Haven't seen Mc Henry beat Crystal Lake, too many times so it doubled our pleasure. Coach Ludwig followed his pattern of substitutiottPWhich has been highly successful this year. However, an injury to Mike Freund upset the applecart for a time. Ever think of the life of a wife of a coach? They must suf fer when a losing season is in progress. There must be some jolly gals in our MCHS Sorority right now. Just watched a fired up Kan sas City football team beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in the pro super bowl. Dan Justen tells us Don Wattles went to New Orleans to watch that big game. Will have to get the story of the game from Don when he returns. Hubert Humphrey was there, too. He lost again. When the Tigers came within 8 points of our previous 16 point lead in the last quarter, our coach had to revise his line up to meet the situation. He seemed to get the right boys in atthe right time. There are some good boys on the Warrior bench. Trouble is -- you can only play five , men at a time. The Brockrogges were up from Crystal Lake to see the game. At half time Don couldn't believe the score. Warriors led by 14 points. ELGIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE at Marian Central H.S.
