" • McHenry brought home fourth place honors at the wrestling tournament at Bradford high school in Kenosha, Wis. The Warriors went down to defeat to Zion Benton, 72-59, and Libertyville 56-44. The Varsity wrestlers de feated Libertyville, 22-19. FEBRUARY The struggling Warriors won their first conference game in two year^wheh they defeated the Cardunals of Dundee 44 to 42. MARCH The McHenry junior high var sity basketball team brought the conference title to their -school with a record of 8 wins against 2 defeats. Johnsburg Junior high's Wildcats scored a come from behind victory to gain a share of the Lake's Conference cham pionship. They outlasted first place Oakland of Antioch 28-26. Mark Bentz scored 17 points for Johnsburg. The Warriors beat Barring- ton 61-60 with only fourteen seconds to go. Junior guard Tom Hurckes made the win ning baskets. McHenry Warriors were e- liminated • in the regional tourney when they were defeat ed by Elgin 65-44. St. Patrick varsity finished with a 14-10 record. They were third in the Legion tournament. They finished third in the Elgin tournament. Ken Wahl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wahl, won the con ference wrestling champion ship at 165 lbs. " «Twas a great day for the Irish" and S.I.H. sported a big Top O' The Mornin* Sham rock with a chip of the Blar ney Stone in the center. The MCHS freshman basket ball team had a fine season and wound up with the second place trophy in tournament play. The Warrior sophomore bas ketball team ended its season with a semi-finals defeat in the Mundelein sophomore basket ball tournament. Their season record is 11 wins and 91osses. For the first time in seven years the Warriors dropped their opener of the baseball season at Mundelein, 9-7. The Warriors beat Cary Grove 5-3. In ten innings the Warriors played a scoreless tie with Lake Zurich. The scrappy Warriors Won a double victory against the highly touted Bulldogs of Grant by the margins of 4-3 and 6-5. The McHenry high school ten nis team lost to Crystal 5-0, but came back to win against and gain the tennis Victory the first contest 3-1 and losing in the nightcap 6-1. The varsity track team won its first North Suburban con ference victory in over two years with a 74-53 win over Dundee. McHenry high golf team is settiiig a fast pace winning three matches and losing one. The freshmen thinclads cap tured their second win of the young track season with a 76- 51 victory over Algonquin. Dundee upset the Warriors 2-1, and the Zee Bees sank the Warrior ship in twin bills, 3-2 and 10-1. McHenry acting as host school to the relays grabbed second place finish in a field of record breaking schools. Kaneland with a score of 92 was first with McHenry sec ond with 82. In a track meet with Bar- rington and Crystal Lake the Warriors came in second with a score of 50 to Barring- ton's 93 points. MAY „ The MCHS golf team con tinued to run Its record to 9-1 with some impressive wins over Woodstock, Elgin, Barring- ton and Antioch. The Warriors played give away when they allowed Lar- kin to tally seven unearned runs and lose the game 7-5. McHenry varsity tennis team avenged an earlier loss to Lake Zurich by downing them 3-2. 16 teams came to McHenry Country club to compete in the Illinois high school district golf tournament. Waukegan was the favorite but was beaten by Carmel of Mundelein. Mc Henry placed 6th with a 337 score. The Warriors were defeated by the Woodstock Streaks in district tourney, 4-2. The McHenry Junior high softball team captured Tri- County conference title with an impressive five win, no loss record. r Mike Antonicelli received three trophies at the All Sports banquet, player of the year; MVP wrestling and best defen sive player, football. The McHenry Shamrocks made their home opener a big success by solidly trouncing the Skokie Indians 11-1. / Winners of awards at the Marian Central sports banquet included Gene Hester, most valuable basketball player, best defensive basketball player and best free throw percentage; Rick Zeller, most valuable baseball player, from the Mc Henry area. The Warriors whipped the Warhawks of North Chicago to gain a second placie tie in the conference. The Wonder Lake Mustang Soccer team lost its first game to Atlantic United, all British Isle players, 11-0. The Warriors beat Crystal Lake nine by a 7-0 decision. The Warrior tennis squad dropped a close pair of matches to Lake Zurich, 2-3 and 2-3. APRIL Warrior ball team splits with Barrington Broncos, winning AUGUST S.I.H. and Walt Freund went to see the Cubs and Giants play ball. £.I.H. was accused of put ting a hex on the Cubs because the Giants won the game. »McHenry Legion baseball team defeated Marengo, 9-3, to gain the cbunty Legion cham pionship. This win was made easy by the strong pitching of Steve Stahlman who gave up 3 singles while striking out 16 men. Swimming for Fox Trails team which placed second in the North Central Illinois state conference swimming meet held at Woodstock were Ricky Mer- kel, John Sek, Kevin Weiss, Eric Weiss, Tom Lightner, Bob Lightner and Don Lightner. Bert "Call Me Ace" Harri son shotf a hole-in-one on the 9th hole at McHenry Country club. Johnsburg Tigers pounded out a 6-3 victory over the McHen ry Shamrocks. History does repeat itself, as witnessed at McHenry Country club when Ed Buss and Art Jackson were tied after 72 holes of play for the club champion ship. It was necessary to play an additional 18 holes and the old Buss magic prevailed by one stroke, 73-72. last year the same two played two play offs before Jackson took the honors by one stroke. _ McHenry Shamrocks beat Chicago Pirates 8-5 and Rock- ford Hawks, 4-1. Marilyn Bishoff won the Mc Henry country club champion ship for a 72 hole total of 357. This is the fourth time Mari lyn has won the club champion ship, winning in 1963, '65 and •67. S.I.H. says there is no es cape from the Cub fans. Ar riving a little late to a Ro tary meeting the group began singing that Hey Hey!, Holy Mackerel! Cub song for his benefit. He also appeared in a picture on his sports page with the Smith children and their Cub Power sign which theydis- played at Wrigley Field. SEPTEMBER Jack Thomas won the men's singles division of the McHen-; ry Tennis club's Open lour ament held on the West cam pus courts. After a hard gles and a doubles match ear lier in the day Jim Doran tired after the first set and default ed after which Thomas was pre sented with the coveted trophy. S.I.H. mourned the death of Rocky Maricano in a plane crash in Iowa. Warriors prepare for foot ball season with soap bowl game with intra-squads. After many years of service as a coach at St. Mary's school, Jim Doran retired and turned his duties over to Mike Dre- her. Jerry and Jim Larkin smashed out hits. Wonder Lake Mustangs tied Juvenus soccer team 2-2. S.I.H. admitted the Cubs gave the fans a lively summer. The ball bounced just right for them in the early part of the season. That wasn't the case at sea son's end. Nobody believed it, but those Mets were for real. S.I.H. invited the Cub fans to join the White Sox group and console themselves with that old refrain, "Wait 'til next year." Warriors Were badly beaten by Zion, 48-12. OCTOBER The Blue Streaks of Wood stock dampened the Warriors spirits at their homecoming game by defeating the Warriors for the first time in 13 years. The score was 42-0. - The running Warriors suc cessfully defended their North Suburban Cross Country crown by capturing the first four places and a 23rd to easily win the conference. The will of the wisp thinclads of McHenry concluded their JUNE The McHenry^chapter of The Tots for the Chicago Cubs in •69 announced the election of Brendan Walsh president of the organization. Twenty-one month old Mr. Walsh of Sky way drive, McHenry, became the chapter's first president. He is the grandson of S.I.H. The Johnsburg Tigers won a 6-5 squeaker from Dundee. About sixty members of Cub Pack 351, Little League mem bers attended the White Sox game in Milwaukee. JULY McHenry defeated Elgin in the first game of the American Legion basebaM district tourn ament by a score of 8 to 7. It was a come from behind vic tory for McHenry after spotting Elgin 4 runs in the first in ning. =- S.I.H. and his better half joined the Plaindealer crew for a steak-out Larry and Triple-L Ranch). The steak was just right, but we were well done when that crowd turned the heat on us. Johnsburg Tigers provided their own fireworks with vic tories over McHenry and May- wood. Final scores of the games were Johnsburg 9, McHenry 6; Johnsubrg, 8, MAywood 1. David and Ann Bolger came to see S.I.H. and unfolded a large Cub banner "McHenry Is Cub Country". Their fath er, Tom Bolger, had us fooled for years. We thought a fellow born on Irish Prairie had to be a White Sox fan and a Dem ocrat. The hat trick means scoring three goals in one game. Cathy did it and those were the only goals scored in the game. McHenry thinclads placed sixth in rugged sectional meet. The chances for going down state for the second year in a row went aglimmering as they pulled up short in a sixth place finish. Warriors showed spirit and spunk in spite of loss to Bar rington, 26-13. NOVEMBER The running Warriors ended a most successful season with a second place finish at the Libertyville Invitational cross country meet, with a total of 70, The first All-Star hockey game of the 1969-70 season was played between the juniors and seniors with the juniors edging out the seniors in a close game.I- \_ .. The Sophomore Warriors - ended the grid season with a 20-8 triumph over Dundee. .... The Warriors dropped the final game of the season to Dundee, 35-8. S.I.H. enjoyed a tour of the remodelled Landmark school and did some reminiscing about many of his former teachers. He was also mighty impressed with the service observing Vet eran's Day. Warrior wrestlers won 29- 19 thriller at Grayslake. Warrior basketball varsity split an opening weekend. They lost to Grant high school 60- 45 and won from Antioch 69- 52. "Hutch's" Wrestlers are on their way again for a winning season. They defeated Larkin, 30-11. McHenry high school wrest ling team suffered its first defeat of the season at the West campus gym. North Chicago, last year's conference cham pions and runners-up in the state tournament and also this year's pick to win Illinois high school state tournament, crush ed the Warriors 41-11. > 5- Warriors remained in first place as they walloped Dundee <• 81-58. k Blue Streak Swimmers sunk McHenry 84-11. Coach Gary Collins' fresh men roundballers remained un defeated with a low scoring 40-30 win over Cary Grove. • Peggy Lawrence was elected president of the McHenry Tennis club. McHenry Warriors picked a pair and downed the Woodstock Blue Streaks 69-51, and edged the rugged Mustangs of Mun delein, 76-61- The Warrior swim team was defeated by DeKalb 70-25 on the home stomping grounds in a swim meet that was actually quite closely fought.
