About the only thing stand ing between a youngster and a car is one small word. That word is "no". It's the par ents who must say it, and say it often, especially during the school year. An insurance com pany study covering 30 high schools and 20,000 students, ex plains why: '. The more eve nings a week the car is used the lower a youngster's grades fall. . Good students who go overboard on cars suffer the sharpest drop in grades. 3. If pleasure driving is permitted during the school week, grades will tumble. These days scholastic fail ure can ruirTa youngster's fu ture by closing the door to car eer opportunities that require a certain level of formal ed ucation. So failing to say "no" to your child may condemn him to a second-rate future. If you allow a teen-ager to wriggle free of parental "inter ference" by buying his own car you'll almost certainly be guar anteeing a drop in scholarship. It's 'often the poorest students who own cars, and the longer they own them the less chance they have of improving their grades. When he has ajob the drop is quicker and further, frequently tafailure. Most teen age boys who hold jobs do so to earn money for car up-keep. They work even longer hours than other job-holding young sters, thus consuming any left over time t^ey ordinarily might have for study. Being lenient with your chil dren's driving can condemn them to visits to police sta tions, hospitals, or worse. The insurance company study show ed that 34 per cent of the sen ior boys polled had been in volved in accidents. If this fig ure seems high, consider the fact that teen-age drivers -- ^ both boys and girls have about a 90 per cent ctance of a crack- up over a three-year period. Youngsters have an amazing ability to react quickly in sit uations of danger. But this abil ity is cancelled out by lack of judgment. On the other hand, young drivers wh6 have completed a high school driv er education course can be very safe motorist. \ five-year study of teen age driving performance con ducted by the Illinois Secretary of State's office with cooper ation of the University of 111- inois Highvyaj Traffic Safety Center snowed that teen-agers (16 through 20) with driver ed ucation had 505 fewer convic tions and/or accidents per 1,000 drivers than those young people'-' who hadJio training. We, as parents, mustdothree things to reduce teen-age high way tragedy. l.*Set a good ex ample in our own driving. 2. Control the amount and kind of driving our young people are allowed to enjoy 3. Make sure our teen-agers enroll in a Dri ver Education Course. TO BE GIVEN AWAY 4 MALE, house trained, 2566 after 5 p.m. TO BE GIVEN AWAY kittens, 7 weeks old. Call 385- 121-128 70 LOCAL GOVERNMENTS Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie an nounced the distribution of $6,- 340,306 to local governments as their share of November income tax collections. Under Ogilvie's tax sharing plan, lo cal governments receive one- twelfth of the revenue collect ed in accordance with the 111- iiwis income tax law. The most recent distribution is one- twelfth of the $75,083,676 col lected in November. This^ the fourth distribution, brings to $16,310,134 the total distributed to counties and municipalities on a per capita, no strings at tached basis since the law went into effect Aug. 1. OLDEST REPUBLICAN Gov. Riehard B. Ogilvie has congratuKated Mrs. Bemice Ol son of 1131 Morse avenue, Chi cago, on being the oldest liv ing Republicans in the state. Mrs. Olson celebrated her 101st birthday on Saturday, Dec. 13. Her husband, the late Judge Harry Olson, was the first chief justice of the Municipal court of Chicago. It was on her sug gestion that Judge Olson' ar ranged the court irto its pre sent subdivisions: traffic, do mestic relations, juvenile, di vorce, etc. Last year when the Chicago and Illinois Bar as sociations offered to help her celebrate her 100th birthday, she replied: "I am a little too old for parties.
