SNOWFALL Snowfall again, so beautiful and white, Just like her my love, of one summer night; The one who called me her own, yet! ^ Only to part, with the first snowfall. As the snow begins to fall, I still can recall that icy stare, As cold as that winter night When she parted out of sight! Now that the weather has changed, My love for her still Remains, The one Pll always be waiting for, Hoping she'll be back with the next snowfall. Henry \Y. Cieslak McHenry (The following poem was written "on location" many years ago. It was just twenty-five years ago on Feb. 19 that thejMarines landed on Iwo Jima and it is to them that he dedicates these lines.) FOR ME AND FOR YOU The Little white banner in the window, Serene in a golden hue, It's crested star tells a story Of loyalty steadfast and true. It was on a December morning When bombs began to fall, Amid the chaos of Pearl Harbor That He answered his country's call. >v A vision of that gripping struggle For Bataan and Corregidor, Of Manila, Java and Wake Island Will live forevermore. That mighty Coral sea battle, The landing of hell-raising Marines, Guadalcanal's bloody foxholes, What price a God Star means From the burning sands of Africa To the ice-bound shores of Attu, With blood and sweat, Throligh cheers and tears, He fought for me and for you. On the Marianna Atolls, And the Philippines, "Neath the deep black sands of Iwo, Lay the hearts of mothers* dreams. In ihe flak filled skies over Germany, „ On that tiny beachhead back of Rome Always pressing toward Victory \ While his thoughts were of us back home. When dawn broke over Normandy, D-Day and its mounting toll, The prayers of a nation pleaded To the Lord up above for his soul. No greater glory, no greater deed, A hero's halo he wears, l Determined, unflinching sacrifice. » How puny "our all" compares, The sun must set on a peaceful earth When the cannon's roar shall dim. And ever and ever this star Will shine Democracy's beacon to him. As time heals the havoc wrought, And cities arise anew, In memory we pause in reverent thought, He died for me and for you. George J.
