Hutchinson, Minnesota: I re member the days when transpor tation wasn't as comfortable or as speedy as it is now. My father loved horses and usually kept a team of foxy, fast bron chos to drive on the road. As we grew up, we learned to handle them, but 1 was always a little bit afraid of them. About 1915, there was a rich man in a nearby town who owned a little red car. When it went by on the road we would all rush to the window to see the unfamiliar sight and it was a great thrill when he would over take^ us on the road and offer us a ride. It was something to brag about to our schoolmates, that "we had a ride in a car." A few years later, my father bought a car: a used Model T EARL WALSH I HEAR SPORTS EDITOR J rick days In our youth. But, we have told you all about our father slicing, "The Hat M| Father Wore" that one day x* the year. Wouldn't hear him sing again until another "great day for the Irish" rolled around. Talk about the luck o' the Irish. St. Patrick's Day Calls on the 17th of March as it falls each year. Now, this year comes a Primary Election on the same day and the pubs will have to close. There ought to be a law. Gerry Kaulk says he is going to wear uf Orange hat on the 17th when! we will be wearin' the green.Bemust like to live dangerously}^.: Memories go back each year to those SPORTS The Crystal Lake Tigers met their Waterloo in the sectional tournament against Aurora East. They did real well to get into the sectionals. That is a select group. The going gets mighty tough the rest of the way to the state finals. They say this is when they separate the men from the boys. We dunno. They must be good to get that far -- all of them. It is a long^hard road. The grapevine tells us there is some planning going on for us to attend the opening day game at Wrigley Field again this year. We'll go if the group promises not to cry on the way home. It breaks us all up to see he-men cry. FRI., MAi*CH 13, 1970- PLAINDEALER-PG. 6 Here's to a happy St. -Patrick's Day. We never tire of the following to give it to you again: AN OLD GAELIC BLESSING May the roads rise with you. And the wind be always at your back, And may the Lord hold you in the hollow of His hand. ITEM: When a plastic raincoat, becomes too shabby to wear, cut* it to waist length, shorten the sleeves and use it as a "cosmetic. cape" when you shampoo yourj hair,- apply make-up or do any thing that requires the protection of an easy-to-clean smock. ITEM: The best indicator for keeping track of your weight is an honest look at yourself in a full-length mirror. You should be"; able to tell if you've gained a few pounds or if your weight is about right. PLAINDEALER PHOTO Freshmen Warriors Win First Game Of Cage Tourney Notes From Your Conservation Department by Bert Hagemann Coach Gary Collins' fresh men basketball squad waltzed through its first round game of the Barrington freshmen tournament with a lopsided 50-29 win over the Woodstock Blue Streaks. The Warriors ad vanced to the semi-finals of the tournament on the basis of a spectacular first half when they outscored the hapless Streaks by a margin of 35-6. The little Warriors hit 43% from the field as Rog Ludwig tallied 15 points, and Mark Bentz chipped in with 10 tal lies and 13 big rebounds. The little Warriors play the rugged ZeeBee squad on this Tuesday, and if victorious there, go into the championship game against the winner of the other bracket on this Saturday in the Dun dee gym. Catch fish from a boat or dock-side by dangling from a string a full can of sardines, punctured with small holes. This allows water to enter and the oil to flow out. It really at tracts fish! A little cod liver oil on dry flies drives pan fish wild! The Illinois fishing license this year will entitle the holder to two poles with a maximum of two hooks on each pole. If Penn State university scien tists suggest that if fish can be found that will survive in slight ly polluted water, streams will have to be cleaned up only enough to accommodate them, thereby saving large amounts of money and effort while develoj ing sport fishing opportunities oAfter vainly searching the re-, motest corners of the country, scientists have concluded the United States ran out of clean air six years ago when pollu-j tion from California Anally reached Flagstaff, Arizona. • •• r* i St. Patrick's Junior Varsity fighting Irish basketball team.
