% PG. 8 - -PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, MARCH 27,1970 Son Of Former Resident Enters Legal Program A former Woodstock resident and a Galesburg attorney have given up Ms private practice to participate in a new pro gram which offers legal coun sel to convicts seeking to ap peal their convictions. In announcing his withdrawal from civil practice, Bruce Stratton, son of Mrs. Oliver St ration, Woodstock, director of nurses at Memorial Hospital for McHenry County, called the new program a unique and ex citing opportunity to "improve the quality of criminal Justice." Mrs. Stratton is the former Carolyn Regner of McHenry. The major goal of the Illinois Defender Project is to provide criminal defense on an appellate level for indigent persons-- those who want to appeal con victions but cannot afford at torneys. After that we all i listened to Mrs. Schooly talk about Day Camp> She asked us «to save bleach bottles; and then we all played games. We had I a surprise when Mrs. Stilling " came to the meeting. We were i all real happy to see her. Beth | Koch, Troop Scribe. \ More: For all who have asked about delivery of Girl Scout | cookies. The delivery date is about April 10. All cookies must t be paid for on delivery. BROWNIE TROOP 464 Last Saturday the Brownies of Troop 464 went to the op era house in Woodstock to see the performance of ••Jack and the Beanstalk" given by the Fine Arts Guild. They were ac companied by Mrs. Hansen, Mrs. Schiller, Mrs. Schooley, Mrs. Fuller and Mrs. Bassett. It's a toss up as to who en joyed the program the most, the kids or the ladies. The Brownies made butter at their last meeting. It was made with K cup of whipping cream and 1 tablespoon of sour cream. The directions are to shake well, press out liquid when ball is formed, add food coloring and salt. Yum! Yum! It was prompt ly eaten on crackers. They also paid a visit to the Easter Bunny and his family at the Choate home and were quite impressed. U COMMUNITY HOUSE SCHEDULE . Approval of funding of the program made Illinois the first state to undertake such a pro gram and has drawn national interest. Stratton pointed out that the project will be funded for three years as a result of action by federal authorities late in 1969. "Reality" Is Theme Sunday In Local Church v The differences between ma terial theories and spiritual values are brought out in the Lesson-Sermon on "Reality," to be read in all Christian Sci ence churches this Sunday. A Bible passage in the Re sponsive Reading is from Col- ossians: "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." One of the selections from Sc ience and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy "states: "When under standing changes the stand points of life and intelligence from a material to a spiritual basis, we shall gain the reality of Life, the control of Soul over sense, and we shall perceive Christianity, or Truth, in its divine Principle." (p. 322) The public is welcome to at tend services starting at 10:30 a.m. at Christian Science so ciety, Lincoln road and East wood lane. But I noticed on the way home that Betsy kept hum ming the "Alleluia" of the anthem. She even remarked how happy the choir sounded. It made me feel happy too. At five, she's too young to real ize the true significance of the Risen Christ, but she can appreci ate the beauty of voices raised in joyful harmony. She can't yet read the New Testament her grand- ' mother sent, but she does enjoy the Bible stories she hears in Sun day School. Bob and I believ^ that no one is too young to learn the loving ways of God. That's why we take Betsy to church with us. We want to share with her the depth and meaning our church has added to our days. Make every Sunday glad!
