The two elections of members for the grade and high school boards of education were held Saturday, Aprin'2, with about seventy-five Votes cast at the grade school and approximate­ ly 140 cast at the high school election, The McHenry community high school is jubilant this week be­ cause the band of which the whole city is so proud, won third place in the North Cen­ tral district contest at Naper- ville. This was the first exper­ ience as participants in a band contest of any kind. Mrs. Bertha Esh of Spring Grove has moved the post of­ fice equipment t<>her home dur­ ing the past week. She has tak­ en care of the mail since the death of the postmaster, H. Peacock. Enumerators, or census takers (most of whom are women), are making their rounds in this area calling at homes from which no census forms were mailed back and at homes from which incomplete forms were returned. ' Each census taker will wear a red, white, and blue identi­ fication card. This card bears the seal of the Department of Commerce, and the words '?Census Enumerator, Official Credential" are printed across fidential nature its face. It bears the census taker's signature and certifies that she is authorized to per­ form the duties of a census e- numerator and has sworn to keep confidential all census in­ formation you provide. Persons purporting to be cen­ sus takers who do not have this identification card should be re­ ported immediately to the local police or to the census district office, which is located at 526 W. The address will be given by Jteverend Windham Bonham and Easter music will be rendered by the choir and orchestra. Sir Knights of the county will report at Masonic hall in full uniform. McHenry friends of Miss Ida Reynolds of Chicago received invitations to attend a song re­ cital in which Amy Leslie Tosky presented her pupils on Sunday, April 6. Miss Reynolds was on the program fro two selections "On Wings of Music" and"Syl- velin". She is a former Mc­ Henry resident. Not' a death was caused by typhoid fever, in McHenry coun­ ty in 1929 according to a re­ port of the state health depart­ ment. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 19, 1945) ,A gold star was again added to McHenry's honor roll this week. This time for Pfc. Clar­ ence'Justen, who lost his life in Germany. At impressive services held at the Woodstock hospital last Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Edwin Reed, with other nurses aides in the county, receive^ her cap. St. John's church, Johnsburg, was the scene of a beautiful spring wedding on April 4 when Miss Violet May of Johnsburg became the wife of Mr. Mi­ chael DiPirro of Marengo. An interest which has not been noted in local school board elections in recent years kept McHenry humming with excite­ ment last Saturday even though places of business were closed because of the death of the pres­ ident. On the grade school board Dr. R.G. Chamberlin was re­ elected president of the board. George H. Johnson and Mrs. Paul Schwerman were elected as members in«the write-in. This is the first time a woman has ever served on either the grade or high school board in this city. Relatives have received word that Gene Dowell was slightly wounded in Germany, March 28, and is now convalescing in a hopsital in England. Parishioners of St. Peter's church, Spring Grove, wit­ nessed a most impressive cer­ emony Sunday morning when solemn high mass was read in honor of the twentieth anniver­ sary of Rev. John Daleiden, their pastor. Ed Pinnow of Crystal Lake who has been employed by Pet­ er M. Justen in the furniture and undertaking business in West McHenry for several years, has resigned and is open­ ing an undertaking establish­ ment in Marengo. The birthday anniversaries of Patricia Lee and Rovena Mar­ shall and Christopher James Bennett were celebrated at the Marshall-Kosinski home on Wednesday evening of this week. The birthdays occurred just three days apart on April 16,17 and 18. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken front the files of April 21, 1960) v- The McHenry Chamber of Commerce held its annual in­ stallation of new officers on Wednesday of this week but something which will last much longer in the memory of the 300 guests was its sponsor­ ship of a "This Is Your Life" program honoring the city's mayor, George P. Freund. No one could have expressed greater surprise than Mayor Freund when he ralized that the interesting and inspiring pro­ gram which preceded dinner at the Wing 'N Fin clubhouse was to recall highlights of his very ^active and useful life. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Huff- master of Pistahee Bay ^an­ nounce the engagement of their daughter, Kay, to Dale Bruback of Island Lake. A July 30 wed­ ding is planned. A popular junior at the Mc­ Henry high school, Kathy Cur- ran, 16, has been named to at­ tend IlUni Girls State at Mc- Murray college in Jacksonville from June 14 to 21. She will represent the local auxiliary. On April 22 and 23 the Jus- ten Furniture store will hold grand opening at the corner of Elm and Green streets. The public is invited to visit the spa­ cious 3,300 square foot build­ ing. Operated by George Jus- ten's sons, Robert and Derails, the store contains a complete line of all types of furniture. It is interesting to note that . this is the third generation of the Justen family to operate one of the city's oldest business. Jacob Justen, father of George, and grandfather of Robert and Dennis started in business in West McHenry eighty-two years ago in 1882. Dennis Conway and a friend, Bruce Johnson, of Scott Air Force Base, were weekend guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Conway. Mrs. Den Gaylord is a guest of relatives at Mauston, Ms., for the weekend. Personals Captain and Mrs. Mark Vy- cital, daughter, Jamie Lynn, and son, Jason, are in the Mc­ Henry area for a month's leave from the Air Force after a five year tour of duty in South­ east Asia. The first two weeks of his leave time were spent with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vycital, and the last two weeks will be spent with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Munroe. This was Jason's first chance to meet his state side relatives. Captain Vycital's next as­ signment will be at Elmendorf Air Force Base near Anchor­ age, Alaska. He will be flying C-130's in the Arfetic area. Lieutenant and Mrs. Gary Vy­ cital and daughter, Samantha, of Washington, D.C., are spend­ ing the week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vycital. He is in the Air Force Systems Analysis program. Mrs. Agnes Wisseli was a weekend guest in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hilmer Heike, in Mundelein and on Sunday accompanied the Heike family to Watertown, Wis., for a visit in the home of her son, Robert Wisseli, and while there attended Confirmation services at the Presbyterian church in Hustisford, JWis.,~to see her grandson, Michael Wisseli, confirmed. , - Mr. and Mrs. Robert Way man and sons of Arlington Heights visited her father, Herb Simon, and other relatives here Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George E. John­ son of Arlington Heights visited his parents, the George H. John­ sons, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Neal McDonald and family of Streamwood were Sunday guests of Mrs. Amanda Freund. Jeffrey and Jennifer Yegge have returned to their home in Milwaukee, Wis.', after spending the weekend in the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Yegge. While here they accompanied them to De- Witt, Iowa, where they visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Frank and their great- grandmother, Mrs. V.H.C. Yegge. Miss Patricia - Pitzen was home from her studies at West­ ern in Macomb, 111., to spend the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Pitzen. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schoewer spent a recent day in Waukegan where she attended a meeting of her pinochle club.
