Dublin Gate Theatre Work At Area College Has anyone ever heard of the Dublin Gate theatre? Probably not, unless he is a student of drama. Hie Dublin Gate theatre is located in Dublin, Ireland. According to Hilton Edwards, co-founder of the Dublin Gate theatre, the Gate was founded for the purpose of "producing plays of unusual interest, and experimenting in methods of presentation free from the lim itations of the commercial thea ter." Essentially, it was to bring back Irish drama to e- qual that of Europe and the United States. Many work*, of drama have been performed on this stage, but one in particular should be mentioned that was written by Brian Friel. It is called •« Lov ers" and is actually two short plays involved in the battle of love. The first part is "The Winners" and the second part is "The Losers". The play it self was so successful in Ireland that it premiered in America at the Lincoln Center Vivian Beaumont theater on July 25, 1968, under the talented and capable production of Miss Helen Bonfils of McHenry Coun ty college in Crystal Lake, on May 15, under the able direction of James Kenna. The producers of the "Lov ers" at Lincoln center - Helen Bonfils and Morton Gottlieb - Lakeland Park Carole Humann 385-1605 Set Deadline for Decision On Swim Lessons The question has come up a- gain this year as to whether or not to conduct swimming lessons at the beach. It is nec essary to have some idea as to how many parents are interest ed and so a deadline of May 15 has been set. If enough interest is shown in continuing the program a Red Cross swim ming instructor will be hired and a registration date set as well as a schedule for instruc tions. Please call either 385- 1921, or 385-3468 or 385-2754 before May 15 stating how many children would take swimming lessons and their ages. If there is a lack of interest in the program it will be discontinued, so please call immediately. CONSERVATION CLUB The next meeting of the Mc- Cullom Lake Conservation Club will be held on Thursday, May 21, at 8 p.m. at the Lakeland Park community house. A let ter has been enclosed in the Lakeland Park Newsletter from Bruce Muench, the state conservationist, citing con ditions and causes of such con ditions and solutions for some of the problems of McCullom Lake. He has recommended the construction of a spillway and rehabilitation of the lake. All persons interested in this pro ject are invited to air their views at this meeting and to hear further testimony on this matter. The lake is our largest and most attractive natural re source and it is to our bene fit to keep it in the best pos sible condition in this day and age of "ecology." More than just a few people will be needed to carry out any projects of lasting value. GIRL SCOUT TROOP 320 Many activities have kept the Girl Scout troop busy. They have been working on badges for the badge ceremony to be held May 6. All girls who have completed badges and paid their* fee will receive them. The ceremony will be held in front of llinvitedguests. These are the Brownie fly-ups who will ' join the troop in September. The mothers had better be prepared with needles and thread to sew on all the awards. Hie girls are learning the have many successes to their credit. Mr. Gottlieb managed, in 1963, despite the New York newspaper strike, to produce "Enter Laughing" which subse quently ran for over a year. Miss Bonfils' successes include such productions as "A Thur- ber Carnival," Noel Cowanfsr "Sail Away," C.P. Snow's "The Affair" and many others. Per haps, Miss Bonfils' most re warding success came while she was an actress in Elitch's Gar dens, Denver. She performed there for about ten years and during that time, the M.C.C. director of "Lovers", James Kenna, had the privilege of working under her. » With all these credits, the Black Watch Players would strongly urge one and all to come to the "Dublin Gate Thea tre" of McHenry County college, Crystal Lake, on May 15,16 or 17 for Brian Friel's "Lovers". M.C.C. students are admitted free with their ID card. Entirely clear days, per year, according to the record; Phoe nix 230: Los Angeles 180: Mi ami, 104. College Plans r Real Estate Courses Soon . STROLLING THROUGH THE PARK Winter has been completely banished if the amount of lawn mowing that took place is any indication. The kids have been busy fishing in the lake and all in all things are looking up in spite of the weathermen pre dicting frosts. A big thanks to all who took the trouble to contact me with news. From all the scuttlebutt I guess it is pretty difficult to break through, and I apologize. Scooter Koehl caught a three pound bass in McCullom Lake near Herzog beach on Tuesday. Hope he enjoyed eating the fruits of his labors. Along with the development of the curriculum, efforts will be made to compile lists of qualified and available instruc tors for the courses.
