The local round was completed on July 9 and the winners are L-R posing with Bob Mortell, state chairman, Mario Vitale of Prospect Heights with a 75, Steve Massa of Elgin with a 79, third place- is Scott Whitten of Lombard with a 81, Nelson Adams of McHenry with a 82 and it was a tie for fifth place by Mike Levitt and Tim Hadding of Crystal Lake with a 83. On the right is Frank Low who assisted Bob Mortell in the local round of the classic. July 23 and 24 will see these boys competing with 48 other boys from the state. Only five winners of the 54 will continue into the National tournament to be held in Twin Oaks Country Club in Oklahoma City, Okla. This is the second annual tournament sponsored by the National Independent Insurance A- gents association. Monday night found Larry Beaman and his Cubs a very happy group of guys when they won their first game of the sea son against the Giants 12-11. Home runs were hit by Cub Guy Winters with two men on and Jim Bacon of the Giants. Credit is given to Guy For- tina of the Giants who played a "nifty" shortstop and kept his team alive on the field. On Tuesday night it was the Cards victorious over the Mets 18-0. Highlights of this shutout had to be Jim Stilling's homerun to center and the excellent pitching of Dave Wickenkamp who allowed only 2 hits and struck out 15. Wednesday night* s ball game had the Sax emerge victorious over the Tigers. No highlights turned in. Thursday night's game mat ched the Mets against the Ti gers with the Mets coming out on top of the 17-13 score. Home runs by John Meyer, Kelly Bute, and two by Ed Choate, all Met players, helped their team score another victory. On Saturday it was a triple header, scheduled that way so everyone could enjoy the Mar ine Festival. « In the first game of the af ternoon it was the Giants over the Sox 6-5. This had to be one of the best played ball games of the season with spe cial mention of the fine job both Bill Stallman and Guy For- tin did for their teams on the mound. 0 The second game of the day had the Cubs and Cards slug it out in the rain with the Cards adding to their winning column by a score of 14-8. Mike Ja- blonski of the Cards is credit ed with a 3 run hona$r and Jim Klapperich's grand slam made his Cub team mighty proud of him. The final game of the day brought together the Braves vs. Tigers. Hiis tightly played ball- game by both teams ended in 4-3 final with the Braves on top. Tennis Club =News= McHenry Tennis Club played host to members of the Fox Trails tennis club for the sec ond time this season on Sun day, July 19 at the West Cam pus tennis courts. Twenty-nine men and women showed up tet 10 o'clock Sunday morning des pite the threatening weather to participate in doubles and mixed doubles play. On Sunday, June. 22, 26 men and women from the same clubs withstood the high winds that prevailed on that day. Since the first two events have met with such en thusiasm, other events will be held in August and September. McHenry Labor Day weekend tournament will be held Sep tember 5,6 and 7. It is now in the planning stages. Within a few weeks application blanks will be mailed out to club mem bers and anyone else who is in terested. John McGowan, who drove in all four runs with his two home runs, had to be the "hero" of the day for the Braves. TTie game, however, is being pro tested. TENNIS TOURNAMENT July 25 and 26, Crystal Lake lbs holding its annual Father- Son/Father-Adopted Son Open Doubles tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25 at the Crystal Lake high school tennis courts. Trophies will be awarded. Other events at this tournament will be: Mother- Daughter/Mother Adapted Daughter doubles; Men's Doub les and Boys under 18 Doubles. ATHLETES AWAY Ripon, Wisconsin -- Names of only five seniors appeared on a list of 43 Ripon college spring sports lettermen just released by Athletic Director John Stor- zer. Also named were eighteen juniors, eight sophomores and a dozen freshmen. The latter were eligible for varsity com petition for the first time.
