Mertes reports that he caught a wall-eyed pike through the ice in front of the Oak Park hotel on the Bay, which weighed 8 lbs., and 10 ozs. The ice fishing apparent­ ly is very good right now. This week also William Ahrens got a pickeral weighing 7% lbs., and Charles Mertes caught three black bass which weighed from 3 to 3% lbs., each. The charity concert given by the combined high school or­ chestras of McHenry, Crystal Lake and Dundee will be given at the high school auditorium tonight. Mrs. Samantha Button, Mc­ Henry' s oldest resident and the only living mother of a Civil War veteran will celebrate her ninety-ninth birthday anni­ versary on Friday, Dec. 12. Sixty-five years ago she watch­ ed her 15 year old son march off to war, a proud member of the eighteenth Illinois Cavalry. The Ringwood Home Bureau met with Mrs. Frank Hitchens, Dec. 2, when the members gath­ ered under the instruction of Mrs. R. Walkup of Crystal Lake. Several parchment lamp shades were nearly completed. A lun­ cheon was served at noon. Miss Graves gave a lesson on "En­ tertainment of the Convalescent Child". Mrs. Fred Eppel and Mrs. Frank Hitchens were e- lected delegates to the January conference at Urbana. f Mrs. Ford Jackson and chil­ dren in company with her moth­ er, Mrs. Josephine Frett, and brother, George Frett, left Monday on a trip to St. Louis, where they will visit relatives. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 13, 1945) Ray McGee, McHenry post­ master, received official no­ tification this Thursday morn­ ing, of the establishment of city delivery in McHenry, effective January 1, 1946. Two deliver­ ies will be made daily in the business section and one in the residential section, contingent upon the provision of suitable mail receptacles or door slots. One delivery of parcel post will be made daily by vehicle in en­ tire city. „ With the current influenza ep­ idemic not yet on the wane, the public will be happy to'learn that influenza virus vaccine, types A And B, a development of wartime research, is how a- vailable for civilian use. Friends are sorry to learn of the death Dec. 11 of Ned Bourelle, a resident of Mc- Cullom Lake for several years. Miss Mary Ann Noonan and several of her friends of Rosary college, River Forest, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Noonan, last weekend. The Schreiner homestead on Park avenue has been sold to Mrs. Elizabeth Gruenfeld of Chicago. Mrs. David Powers, daugh­ ter, Evelyn, sons, JackandJoe, and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Pow­ ers and daughters, Judy and Patsy, and Philip Landis of Crystal Lake were Sunday din­ ner guests in the Sibre Whiting home. Miss Peggy Whiting was one of a class to make her First Communion at St. Patrick's church on Saturday. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 15, 1960) Mrs. Anna Jaknis is confined to Memorial hospital, Wood­ stock, with a fractured hip sus­ tained in a fall at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Richard Ja- ger. A brief illness ended in death the evening of Dec. 9 for Mare- dythe Roeske Cope, 33, of Main street, McHenry. She died in McHenry hospital a few hours after being found slumped over the wheel of her car. Death was attributed to a cerebral hem­ orrhage from which she failed to regain consciousness. A burglary which appeared to be the work of professionals netted about $3,000 in cash and stamps for unknown persons who entered the Wonder Lake post office in the early hours of Tuesday morning and broke Mrs. F.J. Aicher left Satur­ day by jet from 0*Hare Field for several weeks visit in the Robert Engle home in San Ma­ teo, Calif. The women of the Moose Lod­ ge, Dec. 6, meeting was called to order by the senior regent, Marjorie Fernstrom. The char­ ter was draped for a co­ worker, Mabel Biggs, who passed away in Florida. Anna Zahn was enrolled as a new member of the chapter. Mrs. Elizabeth Ingersol of McCullom Lake was rushed to the McHenry hospital by the Johnsburg rescue squad suf­ fering from a heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Brooks are the parents of a baby girl born Dec. 6 at Memorial hospital, Woodstock. "from Colleen McAndrews" The Illinois Law Enforcement commission has given assis­ tance to the Fox River Grave Police department in the form of an equipment grant in the a- mount of $3,271.00 for the pur­ pose of purchasing a new squad car and two portable radios for more effective police patrol. William Cowlin, chairman of the McHenry County Com­ mission on Criminal Justice and State's Attorney for McHenry county, and Don Shrake, project director, have jointly announced the receipt and distribution of this grant. The Fox River Grove Po­ lice department applied for theii* equipment grant on June 4, with the application being re­ viewed by the Police Task Force of ILEC on Nov. 4.
