Press quickly, then allow the steam to rise. This brings up the nap marvel lously. Q. How can I clean and brigh ten up some very old brass or copper that has become very discolored? # A. By using the finest grade of steel wool, followed >* a rubbing with rottenstone and sweet oil. Q. How can I restore hard and lumpy sugar to usable con sistency? A. By placing it in a covered container in the refrigerator for a'few days. Q. How can 1 remove coffbe stains from a glass coffee- maker? A. Simply brew a pot of tea in it. The tannic acid in the tea does a good job of remov ing the stains. Q. IIow can I prevent an un filled pie crust from shrinking? A. Cut <out the center of a foil plate and place the ring upside-down on your unbaked crust. With the center out, the crust will brown. When the crust is baked, remove the ring, and add your filling. Q. How can I, when applying a fresh coat of enamel paint over an already enameled sur face, prevent it from running? A. Try adding a little corn starch to your enamel. Q. How about the removal oi bloodstains in materials? A. Soak the material in cold water ... overnight, if possi ble. Then wash in warm water and soap. If the stains prove obstinate, soak in a mixture of cold water and salt, and then wash, v A. Is there some way in whic^. I can improve the appearance' of a shabby looking black um brella? A. Try brushing over it with a solution of ammonia and water. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 18. 1930) Andrew E. Neilsen, pro prietor of the Neilson Service Station on Route 20 just east of the Fox River bridge, died suddenly from a heart attack Dec. 15 at his home in Oak Park. Some fine fruit has been re ceived by relatives from Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Sayler of Belle- view, Fla., who are spending the winter in the sunny south land. Large grapefruit, oranges and tangerines comprised the boxes. Between Jan. 5 and 15 chil dren in our schools will be given the third opportunity to be vaccinated against smallpox. The community dairy re cently purchased a five ton International truck which will be used to transport milk to its plant in Chicago, where whole sale milk and cream is handled. Mr. M. Polcyn, the new owner, reports that his business is growing rapidly. A party of friends surprised Peter Weingart at his home east of this city Saturday evening in honor of his birthday anni versary. A new -'Service Headquar ters" building project for Crys tal Lake to cost $175,000 has been announced by the Public Service Co., of Northern 111- -inois, in a statement made by E.J. Larking, Local District Manager. Work on the project will start shortly. Paul Gerasch left on Wed nesday of last week for his home in Simlayson, Minn., where he was called by the ill ness of his father. A good time is in store for those who attend the party at the Bridge Ballroom, McHenry, on New Years Eve. Music will be furnished by the Red Devils.
