Kohl. 123070 From The Farm PROBLEMS WITH * HOUSE PLANTS Most house plants do not do well because they are ignored. However, at times, other rea sons contribute to the decline of the plants. Some of the rea sons that house plants look un healthy are as follows: 1. General defoliation is us ually caused by suddentemper- ature change, shock from trans planting, and sudden or drastic changes in light intensities. 2. Leaf drop and-dwarfing can come from too many sol uble salts and gas from stove or other sources. 3. Scorched leaf tips become damaged from cold drafts, in sects, too much fertilizer and improper watering. 4. Off-color in foliage may be from excess watering, lack of fertilizer, and insects. 5. Spotted foliage is usually due to scorching due to too much direct sun, disease and insect feeding. Some ways to correct these problems are to keep plants in as cool, 65 degree to 75 de gree, and as brightly lit area as possible. Fertilize plants every week or two during the summer and every three to four weeks during the winter. Water plants only when the soil is dry to the touch. Do not let plants stand for more than a half hour in the water that drains out of the bottom of the pot. CULLING GUIDE These culling guides will help you decide whether or not to keep or to cull first calf hei fers: (1) Heifers should produce within 70 percent of the herd average during their first 305 day lactation period. If your herd average is 12,500 pounds of milk, then you shmild re quire your first calf heifers to finish the first lactation with no less than 8,750 pounds of milk in 305 days -- just to maintain the average. And, if you are shooting for a 15,000 pound herd average, those first calf heifers will have to make over 10,500 pounds of milk. (2) You can cull based on pro duction during the first 120 days of the first lactation per iod. The average cow produces at least 50 percent of her milk during this period. ,You should expect your heifers to produce around 45 percent of their milk in this same per iod. This would mean that a heifer in a 12,500 pound herd must have at least 3,940 pounds of milk in 120 days. In a 15,000 pound herd she should have at least 4,730 pounds. (3) Compare the heifer with herdmates freshening during the same year and season. If her 305 day ma ture equivalent record is below the average of all her herd- mates, she may be a candidate for culling just on the general principle that it takes better than average performance to make solid progress.
