Private Contributions Proservo The Historic Showplaces Of England One of the admiral, private organizations in England is The National Trust, which is owned by the people ofEng* land since it is privately supported. Occasionedly, there has been a government grant or two in the past-with no strings or control afctached-but the money to operate the National Trust comes from citizens and firms who are in terested in conservation and the preservation of historical sites and properties. * National Trust Support is therefore purely voluntary. Money comes from members' subscriptions, gifts, legacies, endow ments, admission charges and rents for properties. In 1896 the Trust made its first purchase-a straw roof house dating from the 1200* s, which was then still in use in southern England. In the more than seventy years since, the Trust has acquired 356,000 acres of land and is the largest landowner in the country-after the state itself and the crown. The National Trust moves to acquire and preserve such sites as Chartwell, where Prime Minister Winston Churchhill liked to spend his weekends. The home in Kent is kept as nearly as possible just as it was when Churchill lived there. It maintains Rudyard Kipling's home in Sussex in the same manner. One of the properties the National 'Trust maintains is the stone manor house which was the seat of George Washing- [ laofflgliifi IF®ir fexd When using canned mushrooms instead* of fresh ones, count on three four-ounce cans to equal one pound of fresh mushrooms cooked. If you brown canned mushrooms in butter or margar ine before adding to other foods, the flavor of the mushrooms will be more distinctive. A "broiler duckling" or "fryer duckling" is a young duck, usu ally under 8 weeks old, and usually very tender. A "roaster duckling" is usually 16 weeks old or younger and still quite tender. The term "strip steak" on the menu refers to the large muscle found in both the porterhouse and T-bone. A very flavorful, ten der steak, it may be broiled or pan-broiled. Sometimes it's called a New York Strip Steak or even a Kansas City steak. For a hot chocolate rum sauce, heat 1 can (1 pound) Dutch choc olate pudding; add % cup chopp ed, walnuts and % to 1 teaspoon rum flavoring. Pour over bread pudding. Tasty -Topic ton's family. Another is the meadow at Runnymede, where the most important document in the development of demo cracy and freedom in history, the Magna Carta, was signed by King John in 1215. On this site there is a new plaque in memory of the late American President, John Kennedy. In addition to these sites, of so much historical interest, the National Trust maintains other properties which pre serve the natural beauty of the country. There are tracts along the coast where one can walk for hours and see the seaside just as it was hundreds of years ago, unchanged by man. * There are over 15,000 acres of mountain scenery preserv ed and chapels which date back for more than 900 years. In short, this private fund does much of which our federal government does with its parks and national preserves, etc. But the Trust in England costs the government nothing-a point which commends itself strongly. *>K. (For And About Teenagers FUNNV SO THEY WILL- THE WEEK'S LETTER: "I like a lot of boys at school but none like me. I have a tendency to try to act funny so they will notice I am there. I try to re mind myself I should quit acting funny. There is one boy I like a lot. He tried to pick a fight with my girlfriend's boyfriend and I called the boy a name. He called me a name, so now I know that he hates me. What can I do?" OUR REPLY: You have al ready said it yourself. You should stop trying to attract attention to SEW WHAT? THIS WEEK'S PATTERN'8 BY AUDERY LANE yourself by being "funny." The truth probably is that people who hear you do not consider what you say to be funny at all. You are more likely considered a smart-aleck. If you want to be liked by boys, begin to act like a lady. To accomplish this, you must pay attention to your ap pearance and to your manner. Be femire, be friendly. Think beautiful, think happy. It works. If you have a teenage problem you want to discuss or an observation to make, address your letter to FOR AND AQOUT TEENAGERS. Hrhultz, Donald Doherty R.Ph. CIGARETTES NO. 1 THE HEAVY SMOKER To stop smoking by a plan or ritual is not so effective as just quitting. Will power is required - garnished liberally with motivation. It is much easier when there is a good reason to quit, such as bron chitis or a heart attack. Quit* ting is difficult because smoking is a habit involving the use of the hands and mouth. The prob lem is more complex when there are not apparent ill effects from nicotine or if one quits and feels no better. Winston Churchill is quoted as saying: "Will power is a quality that every man pos sesses up to the day he gives up smoking." Mark Twain made a classic statement on the sub ject: "It is not hard to quit smoking, I've done it a thou sand times." Both men lived to a ripe old age; Churchill smoking his cigars, and Mark Twain, pipes and cigars.
