In the fi­ nals they caught local rival St. John's of Johnsburg on a cold dsy to move out to a 21-6 half-time lead and a final score of 53-29. The G.A.A. sophs and jun­ iors were winners in the All- Star games. APRIL fii their first game of the season the Warriors man­ handled the Mustangs of Munde- lein, 15-1. They also defeated Cary Grove by the margin of 5-0. Warriors whacked Wauconda, 5-1, with Gary Fairchild get­ ting a home rim. They also de­ feated Grant high school in six innings, 11-0 for fourth straight win. Coach Walt Scott* s trackmen came in with a second place finish in their season opener with a score of 56, 16 points behind the winning Crystal Lake total. For the first time in Ave years, the Warrior baseball team defeated a varsity squad from Dundee in baseball. .The score was 9-2. Warriors won a pair of ball games from North Chicago, 5-0 and 7-4. MCHS golfers were off to a fast start in spite of cold weath­ er. Warriors win over Streaks 6-2 and extends conference rec­ ord to 4-0. MCHS tennis teams beat Cary-Grove for a 4-1 record. The Warriors stumbled but recovered to tie Elgin 4-4. Un­ beaten Warrior nine defeated Libertyville Wildcats twice. McHenry golf team beat Mun- delein, Dundee and Waukegan. Unbeaten Warrior nine beat Libertyville Wildcats twice. 45 out of 60 eligible girls were initiated into the G.A.A. at McHenry high. .. At the annual athletic ban­ quet sponsored by the Board of Education, V.F.W., and Cham­ ber of Commerce awards were presented to Steve George and Don Thurlwell for football, Mike *Stark and Bill Harvey, swim­ ming, Brad Pictor, cross coun­ try, Tom Hurckes, basketball, Jim Lightner, tennis, John Las- kowski, wrestling and a pair of trophies went to Gary Fair- child for football and the "Ath­ lete of the Year". The rousing Warriors rallied to tame the Crystal Lake Ti­ gers to keep their perfect sea­ son's record intact at 11-0. MAY The Warriors suffered their first defeat of the season in extra innings when Barrington won 2-1, in a double header. In the second game the War­ riors bounced back to win 8-3, to keep in first place. The MCHS golfers lost their first match of the season to Zion by a score of 172-168. The Warriors unleased one of their most potent scoring at­ tacks of the season as they clip­ ped the Cardunals of Dundee 15- 3. In the opening round of state district play at McCracken field, McHenry edged Marian Central 3-2. S.I.H. and his wife took off for Bermuda on a 5-day plan­ ned tour. He even wore some Bermuda shorts while he was gone. We will all wait to see the picture which was taken. The fighting Warriors came from behind once again to edge arch rival Woodstock 3-2 and win the district crown, i MCHS golfers placed sixth in district. The Warriors were dumped 4-2 by Elgin in regional play. Senior Brad Pictor set a new school record for McHenry high of 9.39.4 in the two mile of the state district track meet held at Prospect high school. He qualified for the Illinois State final track meet in Champaign. JUNE According to the conservation department report from Bill Stanlik fishing was very good at the McHenry Dam state park' with catfish running to 20 lbs. Among the athletes from Mc­ Henry honored with awards at Marian Central high school were John Pitzen, most valu­ able baseball; Rich Jakubowski, winner of the newly-established Sister Lenore trophy; Bob Zim­ merman, most.valuable track­ man; Pat Niesen, student ath­ lete award winner; TimAlthoff, free throw trophy winner; Tom Blenner, sportsmanship award winner and best defensive play­ er. Warriors bounced back to beat Blue Streaks, Woodstock, 2" to 1. Warriors split with Zee-Bees and dropped team to ! second place. JULY At a recent ceremony at the McHenry Youth League baseball field, three men of the com­ munity were honored for their many years of assistance in promoting supervised activity for boys. Ernie Usemen, Fred Meyer and Earl Walsh were presented with All-Star caps and a baseball. The Johnsburg Tigers beat Genoa, 7-1. They lost a heart- breaker to Glen Ellyn in eleven innings, 7-6. The McHenry Shamrocks split a pair of ball games, beating the Melrose Park Colt 45's, 6-5 and losing to the Wheaton Cardinals, 5-3. Mr. and Mrs. Verne Thomp­ son visited Chuck Hiller in Nor­ folk, Va., where he is manag­ ing the "Tidewater Tides" baseball team, an Internation­ al League club owned by the New York Mets. The Tigers routed Wheaton, 12-4. Myrt Johnson of McHenry made a hole-in-one on the 18th hole at McHenry Country club. Her opponent in the match tour­ nament was Marilyn Reihans- perger and they were even at the 17th hole. The state playoffs of the American Pro-Youth Golf Clas­ sic were held at the McHenry Country club. S.I.H. acted as parade mar­ shal for the Marine Festival parade. He was the target for a lot of kidding from our "Bren- da" in remarks in her '*Musin and Meanderin" column. S.I.H. told her the only disturbing part of the whole thing was to learn that so many people read her column. Bob Ha user, former MCHS athlete, has been named coach of the defensive backs by the Racine Raiders football man­ agement. The second annual American Pro-Youth Golf Classic's state tournament was completed at McHenry Country club with Scott Nicholas, 17, from Rock- ford, emerging victorious. Johnsburg Tiger player Mark Wegner hit a 2 run homer in the ninth inning to beat Mel­ rose Park Eagles 3-2. AUGUST S.I.H. and spouse enjoyed a steak fry provided by the Boss- Man, Larry Lund and his wife, Lynn, for the Plaindealer gang. He even watched the Cubs game on TV. S.I.H. presented trophies to most valuable players of the McHenry Youth league. Players were Guy Winters, Cubs; Scot Belohlavy, Cards;Roger Wanta, Tigers; Kelly Bute, Mets; Bill Bolger, Braves; Doug Nelson, Sox; Tom Knaack, Giants. The Braves team won first place in the league. Millie Leisten captured first place in fourth flight at the ninth annual Northern Illinois wo­ men's golf association invita­ tional medal tournament at Bar­ rington. The first weekend of the Northern Illinois Amateur baseball tournament saw North Chicago defeat Dundee 8-6, Melrose Park edged McHenry 3-1. Melrose Park won another close one, as they defeated North Chicago 6-5. McHenry was eliminated as Dundee pounded out a 9-2 decision. Oak Park beat Libertyville 3-2 while Waukegan came from be­ hind for 7-6 victory over Johns­ burg. Johnsburg dropped Lib­ ertyville from the tournament tfith a 14-4 score. Oak Park beat Waukegan, 4-0. Fame came to John Looze in Canada. He caught a a 40 lb., 12 oz., muskie. S.I.H. marked 35th an­ niversary as Sports Editor and columnist for the Plaindealer. He took over the duties of Itor- old "Zeke" Bacon, whose 'ba­ con's Strip" was a popular feature for six years. S.I.H. published his first column with highlights of years ago. Mar­ ion Anderson named the column "So I Hear". "Bill" Hutchinson was ap­ pointed head coach of the Cross Country team when Don Sea ton was promoted toassistantprin­ cipal at East Campus. In 18 holes of masterful golf In at McHenry Country club Art ! Jackson shot a 67 (34-33) to win the crown. It was the same pair of~pressure golfers, Art Jack­ son and Ed Buss, battling dqwn to the wire. Buss finished with a 39-36 for 75. The bowling proprietors in McHenry county presented a check for $367.50 to the Mc­ Henry County Association for the Retarded. SEPTEMBER i A large and enthusiastic crowd of tennis players and spectators participated in the second annual Labor Day open tennis tournament sponsored by the McHenry Tennis club. 170 entries made the tourney a suc­ cess. The Sophomore team lost the opening game when DeKalb de­ feated them 34-6. S.I.H. received a long letter from his Old pal, Harold "Zeke" Bacon in which Bacon remin­ isced about sports in McHen­ ry over a period of 35 years. McHenry Warriors bowed to Dundee football team, 27-12. OCTOBER , McHenry Harriers won Crys­ tal Lake-Grant invitational meet. The sophomore football team lost its conference opener to Dundee, 22-12. The frosh-soph Cross Coun­ try team ran its victory string to seven straight for the year by beating Elgin Larkin in a dual meet and also Elgin and Dundee in a double-dual. The McHenry Gears light­ weight football team lost to Fox Lake Cardinals, 26-0. The Warriors stunned Zion Benton by a score of 16 to 13. Gary Fairchild was a starting tight end on the 1970 football team at Augustana college, Rock Island. MCHS Cross Country team beat Zion and Antioch. The running Warriors, de­ feated last week by Elgin after winning 36 straight meets, started a new winning streak with an impressive win over Crown, 18-44. The McHenry Warriors edged Libertyville 14-12 in a thrilling homecoming game. McHenry placed second in Cross Country championships. The running Warriors started off the homecoming week fes­ tivities by beating a tough con­ ference opponent, Libertyville, and non-conference foe Lake Zurich. The Libertyville score was 24-31 and Lake Zurich was 17-44. Mrs. Harold (Teresa) Stef- fan caught a 7% pound walleye at Powers Lake, Wis. Hie sophomore football War­ riors downed the Wildcats of Libertyville 6-0 at home­ coming. . Crystal Lake Tigers beat the Warriors, 14-8, as fumbles hurt. Cathy Bolger was elected captain of the field hockey team and is also the leading scorer for the Northern Illinois Uni­ versity hockey team at DeKalb. Sophomore Cross Country team remained undefeated. Varsity Cross Country team finished dual meet season with victory, with wins over Wood­ stock, 18-41 and Marian 15-48. Warriors rolled Over Wood­ stock 34-12. The McHenry cross country team qualified for the state sectional meet by placing third in the district meet held at Crystal Lake. The Warrior cross country team finished third in North Suburban meet. MCHS freshman football team tied Woodstock 14-14. NOVEMBER Playing in a steady downpour the Warriors defeated North Chicago 14-6. The running Warriors finish­ ed their season with a very re­ spectable sixth place finish in the Barrington sectional meet. Jim Frost was named offen­ sive lineman of the week at Western Illinois university. Mary Jo Guab, former resi­ dent of Wonder Lake, was se­ lected to the varsity cheerlead- ing squad at Rockford college. Miss Gaub is a sophomore. The Barrington Bronchos de­ feated the Warriors and claim­ ed an undefeated North subur­ ban conference championship. The McHemry Harriers com­ pleted another very successful season in 197(1 as they com­ piled a dual meet record of 14 wins and 2 losses. \ MC HS sophomore * - gridmen beat Barrrington Ponies 16 to 14. Gary Hosier, Len Gehrke and Tom Fry were rewarded for their excellent play during the past season as they were nam­ ed to the thirty-three man North Suburban All-Conference team. Hosier was one of only five unanimous choices as he was selected for his outstanding season as an offensive pass receiver. The wrestling Warriors lost their opening match by a score of 31-11 to Grayslake. McHenry's Lina Miller and Hammond, Indiana's x Bryan Kasper, a pair of teen greats on skates, won first place in state competition and advanced to Lavonia, Mich., where they took second place in the inter­ mediate division in sectional competition. McHenry wrestlers beat Lake Zurich, 38-15. McHenry Warriors success­ fully defended their Lake Zurich Thanksgiving tournament crown when they defeated Wauconda, 65-46; Stevenson, 70-56 and T^ake Zurich 79-54. The varsity wrestlers defeat­ ed Elgin Larkin 28-14. The Jun­ ior varsity wrestlers won over Elgin Larkin and the sopho­ more wrestlers kept their vic­ tory string intact with their third straight dual meet win with a 30-24 victory over Elgin Larkin. The sophomore War­ rior wrestling team won the Cary Grove holiday quadrang­ ular meet as they defeated host Cary Grove 36-16 and Barring­ ton 38-13. The junior varsity swimming Warriors tied Harlem of Rock- ford in adual meet, 47-47. The G.A.A. girls honored their Dads at "Daddy Date Night". DECEMBER The Warriors increased their record to 5-0 with a convincing 67-47 rout of Dundee and a thrilling come - from - behind 70-65 victory over Grant. The Junior varsity wrestlers beat Dundee Cards 28-24, while the varsity wrestlers fell *to Dundee 26-23. .The junior high school seventh grade basketball team had gone undefeated. The eighth grade team has won 4 and lost 1. The sophomore wrestling Warriors ran their season rec­ ord to 6-0 with a convincing 31-15 triumph over Dundee. The varsity swimmers beat Elgin Larkin 49-46. The jun­ iors won over Larkin 72-22. The sophomore Warriors ran their season's record to 5-0 with victories over Dundee, 58- 54 and Grant, 60-47. The fresh­ man team opened its season with a win over Dundee, 67- 41 and Lake Zurich, 66-58. Warriors won a thriller over Libertyville, 67-66. They won their seventh game in a row over Mundelein, 53-42. The wrestling Warriors won one match and lost one in their own invitational quadrangular meet at West Campus. Round Lake defeated the Warriors 28- 20. McHenry defeated Crown, 28-20. , Most valuable player award was given to Gary Hosier at the sports banquet. He led the North Suburban conference in scoring and was picked on the All Star team. Alex Agase, head coach at Northwestern uni­ versity, was the principal speak­ er at the banquet. The most valuable member of the cross country team was awarded to Keith Hutchinson. Best defend sive players in football were Len Gehrke, Keith Thomas and Tom Fry. Hosier, Fry and Gehrke also received the Gol­ den Helmet award which is giv­ en to the first team all-con­ ference players in the North Suburban conference. Gary Fairchild was the re­ cipient of the Dr. F.A. Schiotz trophy signifying his selection as the most valuable freshman on the 1970 football team at Augustana college, Rock Island. Zion handed the Warriors their first defeat of the season, 75-66. The Warriors also lost to the hot shooting Antioch team, 64-48. The sophomore team con­ tinued its winning streak with an overtime game against Zion, 41-39. The eighth graders beat Mon­ ti ni, 38-26. The seventh grad­ ers lost their first game when they were beaten by Montini team 40-24. They won a close contest when they beat Lake Zurich 22-21. The eighth grad­ ers beat a determined Lake Zurich team 33- 31. The varsity swimmers lost to Dundee and the J.V.'s were edged by DeKalb, 51-44. S.I.H. thoroughly enjoyed the annual Christmas party put on by the Plaindealer gang. "Bren- da" drew his name and withthe help of Clement Clark Moore presented him a masterpiece attached to a framed Irish toast with shamrocks and Lepre­ chauns. The toast read "May you be in heaven a half hour before the Devil knows you're dead." He also received two pair of box seats for the open­ ing game in White Sox park. Ac­ companying the tickets was a fresh bottle of "Spring Tonic", also an autographed baseball with all the names of the Cub team. Just what he always want­ ed. WHO KNOWS! 1.
