/ Zion Upsets Home Wrestlers 23-21 Zion Benton upset the wrest ling Warriors at West campus gym last Tuesday by a 23-21 score. The Warriors could manage just two victories over the Zee Bees as Johnston (132) and co-captain Weingart (167) won by decision. The Warriors picked up their other 15 points on three Zion forfeits as the visitors were unable to put an opponent on the mat at the 105, 138 and heavyweight divisions. From The Farm NEW STILBESTROL f REGULATION IS MONEY MAKER FDA regulations regarding stilbestrol have been changed to- allow feeding of 20 milligrams per head daily to cattle that weigh more than 750 pounds. Research results indicate that this new, higher level will be a money maker compared to the previous limit of 10 milligrams per head daily. But an important point to re member is that cattle given stilbestrol must be fed just as long as cattle not given stil bestrol if the stilbestrol-fed cattle are to grade satisfactor ily at slaughter. This means that, stilbSstrol-fed cattle must be 50 to 100 pounds heavier when they go to> market. Also important is the 48- hour withdrawal period for stil bestrol that's required when cattle go to slaughter. The FDA promises that it will prosecute when stilbestrol residues are found inbeef tissue at slaughter. STOP FEEDING DES TWO DAYS BEFORE MARKETING Cattlemen feeding diethyl- stilbestrol.j<DES) should stop feeding DES two days before marketing. DES is a growth stimulating hormone. It's probably the most important improvement in cattle feeding during the last 25 years. Cattle gain weight 15 percent faster and feed ef ficiency improves 10 percent when fed DES. However, there is no toler ance level for DES, therefore the FDA requires that cattle feeders stop feeding DES two days before marketing. The an imals' metabolic processes clear the hormone from their bodies during the 48-hour per iod. NEW HOG RATION CIRCULAR OUT As hogs and the ways you raise them change, feeding rec ommendations also change. A new University of Illinois cir cular, "Your Hog Business - Ration Suggestions," is fresh off the press and contains the new feeding recommendations. Pick up a copy at the County Extension Office. Pleasie ask for Circular 1023. PRAIRIE FARMER LEAF BLIGHT SPREAD Pay particular attention to pages 31-38 in the January 2 issue of Prairie Farmer. The Cooperative Extension Service has worked out an arrange ment with the magazine to pre sent the U. of I.'s latest in formation on southern corn leaf blight. We'll also be discussing leaf blight problems at the Crop Production Day and Crop Pro tection Day meeting on Feb. 4, 1971. NEW SWINE DISEASE BOOK AVAILABLE •'Swine Health: CommonDis- eases Affecting Baby Pigs," edited by A1 Leman, U. of I. Extension veterinarian, is a- vailable from his office 163 Vet. Med., University of Illin ois, Urbana 61801, for $1. The 68-page book prepared for the National Pork Produc ers Council and Federal Ex tension Service, contains a lit erature review of five import ant diseases -- TGE, MMA, colibacillosis, swine dysentery, and clostridial enteritis. The book was. prepared especially for educators and researchers, but producers may find it a useful addition to the farm li brary. CALVES NEED ROUGHAGE The digestive system of a young dairy calf requires a high-energy, concentrated-type feed in order to meet the calf's nutrient requirements. The best feeds to supply these needs are milk, milk replacers, and grain mixtures. • However, it's also important to offer the calf free choice of high-quality hay. Roughage tends to stimulate the growth and development of the calf's digestive system. This allows the calf to utilize roughage i efficiently at an early The overall result is lower feed costs for well grown-out dairy heifers. SOW NEEDS MORE PROTEIN DURING LACTATION Do you ever stop to think how much more protein a sow needs during lactation than dur ing gestation? Studies in England show that the average pregnant sow deposits about 4.1 pounds of protein in her developing pigs and the mem branes surrounding them and about 1.4 pounds of protein in her udder. The sow had 114 days to make these deposits. In contrast, Illinois studies show that a sow nursing 8 pigs will secrete .63 pound of pro tein in her milk each day. In other words, a sow secretes as much protein as Wilk during a week as she deposits during all of pregnancy. This underlines the importance of feeding about all the 16' percent ration a sow will eat during lactation. ^ t . . BREED ALL DAIRY ANIMALS TO BEST SIRES To make the most rapid im provement in inheritance or production in your dairy herd, breed every cow and heifer to the best transmitting dairy sire available. Dairy men who breed their heifers, and many of their cows, to beef bulls may find themselves short of heifers for herd replacements. Most herds must replace about one-fourth of all cows each year, and it takes most of the heifers born in a herd to fulfill that de mand. A lion can run about 35 miles per hour, a rhino about 20, but a cheetah can do 70, mak ing it nature's fastest land an imal. • •' • : i' . ; . -v. • - f>AGE 7-PLAINDEALER-WED., JANUARY 13, 1971 >00000000000000001 SAVINGS SAVINGS SAVINGS SAVINGS SAVINGS SAVINGS PRINTERS PUBLISHERS EST 1875 infjfenry I- Established 1875 3812 West Elm Street McHenry, Illinois 1 I I I I I I I I I I 3> I at nJealer I I Phone 385-0170 I 60050 ^ I Published Every Wednesday & Friday at McHenry,Illinois Second Class Postage Paid at McHenry,Illinois by McHENRY PUBLISHED COMPANY Larry E.
