\ PAGE 9-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. JANUARY 29. 197! Clifford Wardle, director of Christian education points to the area of greatest need in the local First Baptist church. Lee Chappell, director Church Votes Budget Increase For Youth Needs Members of the First Bap- ist church of McHenry, in a spe cial business session voted overwhelmingly to seek to go beyond the budget proposal of their elected budget committee. The need to make a more direct ed attempt at relating to, and providing for, the, needs of young people today sparked the sug gested increase. Immediately following the adoption of the budget presented by Melvin Hicks, budget chairman and deacon of the church, a chal lenge was made to go-beyond the newly adopted budget by providing for an assistant pas tor who would direct his at tention especially toward the young people. In keeping with the efforts during this, the tenth year of the church's existence, several ar eas for improvement of pro gram and service to the com munity were considered. One other item with high priority is the construction of a new sanctuary. However, it was the near unanimous expression of the congregation that the need in the youth division should take precedence. Lay leaders now involved in the church's youth program in clude Lee Chappell, division director; C. Edward Erb, Jr., and John Benson, depart ment directors and John Mc- Grath, Diana Erb, Dorothy Con rad, Kathy Burkett, Wilma Par- vin, Libby Benson and Joanne Chappell. There are approxi mately 100 young people en rolled in the church's activi ties. Parable Of Good Samaritan Among Bible Readings What it means to be a neigh bor will be explored Sunday at McHenry Christian Science church services. The parable of the good Sa maritan will be included in the Bible readings. "Love" is the subject of the Lesson-Ser mon. The Golden Text is from Romans' "Love worketh no ill to his neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law". A passage to be read from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Bak er Eddy states: "The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand of the youth division of the church,'seems in complete agreement. AREA NEWS The pond at the Country Club is safe for ice skating, how ever, this time of year caution is advised since thawing might cause problems. Also the re cent tragedy in McHenry involv ing a snowmobile should be a warning to all, while the snow mobile is a great form of win ter fun it is also dangerous if caution is not used. I owe special appreciation to Patty McMahon for helping me with the column this week. And in closing our special get-well wishes to Cherie Prince of Country Club Drive recovering from recent surgery. "God isn't dead," he argued as our children watched. "He was never alive!" Mary and I felt that Christian children such as ours should realize that not everyone believes in God. Perhaps, knowing this, they could better un derstand the state of the world. We would encourage and answer their questions as best we could, confident that God would not allow their faith to be destroyed. Later, before I tucked Kristen into bed, she clasped her hands and closed her eyes. "Dear Lord," she prayed, "Thank you for Mommy and Daddy. Thank you for Zoomie (her goldfish) and Toddy and my new dress . . ." She stopped suddenly, and I raised questioning eyes to her. "Daddy," she said anxiously, "that man on TV doesn't have anyone to thank!" Do you have Someone to thank? Come to church this Sunday.
