Cows should not be excef- sively fat at calving time, bat they should receive all the good quality roughage they will eat, plus some grain, during the dry period. Increase grain feeding during th^ last two weeks be fore calving so a cow is eat ing one to one and one-ha If pounds of grain for each 100 pounds of body weight. Increase the amount of grain fed at the rate of about one pound each day for the first two weeks after calving, but be careful not to throw the cow "off-feed." Feeding recom mended levels of protein, min erals, and vitamins, and not making abrupt changes in the ration will also help get a fresh cow off to a good start on her lactation. GIVE CALVES BEST HAY The best hay for dairy cal ves is legume-grass hay you cut in the bud to initial bloom stage and stored to retain its leaves and color. Most calves will start eating hay when they are between one and three weeks of age. Offer them all of the fresh, clean hay they will eat.
