PAGE 11-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5; 197* PLAQUE PRESENTATION -- Noah L. Miller, second from left, looks over plaque presented to him by the Easter Seal Therapy Center for McHenry County in recognition of twenty years service for that organization. Miller and Miss Marie Vogt, left, his secretary at the State Bank of Woodstock, have handled record keeping for the fund drive each year. Making the presen tation are Mrs. Evelyn Williams, 1970 fund drive chairman, and Ray Wolf, treasurer for the Therapy center. DON PEASLEY PHOTO Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 22, 1931) A pretty midwinter wedding took place at Johnsburg Jan. 21 when Miss Martha Tonyan, daughter of Mr. William B. Tonyan and Mr. George Sch- mitt of Johnsburg were united in marriage in St. John's Cath olic church by Rev. Father Voll- man. The centennial of the reaper was celebrated in McHenry when the International Har vester company put on an all day program at Mat Freund's implement house on Pearl street, local representative for the company. About 200 farmers were present during the day to enjoy the Ave reels of moving pictures showing the progress of the harvester from the time of its invention to the present age of the combine and the din ner which was served at Bick- ler's hotel at noon. About twenty high school friends of Miss Julia McLaugh lin of Ringwood surprised her on her birthday anniversary at her home Friday evening, fol lowing the basketball game. Dr. D.G. Wells left this Thursday morning for Mon treal, Canada, where he will visit his mother who was quite severely injured. Mrs. W. Bonham, wife of the pastor of the Methodist church, who has been at Wesley Mem orial hospital for two weeks is now at home but is still ill and confined to her bed. Capsule sisters and their friends are invited to attend a party at the home of Mrs. E.E. Bassett, Jan. 27. Each one is asked to bring a small gift for their capsule sister with their own name inclosed as the year will be ended and the capsule sisters revealed at this time. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 24, 1946) Earl Dowell who recently re turned from overseas military service, was appointed by May or Overton and the appointment approved by the city council at the meeting Monday night, as Chief of Police in the city of McHenry. In appointing Dowell, the council took further steps in the reorganization of the local police force. The city will now have three policemen on duty in 8 hour shifts. In the most popular baby con test" little Susanne McVicker was announced the winner while Jimmy Hester topped the male voting. Ribbons were awarded to Kathleen Albright and Thom as Antonsen as runners up. Pete Brown, who resides near Volo, has purchased the Hunter house on John street. Henry Schaefer of Big Hollow recently bought the Owen house on Wau- kegan road which was occupied by the Harold Vycital family. Clinton A. Hermann, 54, a summer resident of Johnsburg community, died Jan. 18. He had been an employee of the Western Electric company for thirty-five years. Taking its place with the many other changes in business ownership in McHenry is that of the former Adams' taxi ser vice operated by Mrs. Ben Ad ams. Cecil L. Ballowe of Won der Lake last week purchased this business and is now ser- DIAL-A-DEVOTION PHONE Hear God's Word Wherever You Are. ving the public in and around McHenry. . TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 26, 1961) A 20 year old father of a six month old son was killed in a collision of his car and a gas truck near Springfield, 111., on Jan. 18, just a short time be fore he and his wife were to leave for California to make their home. He was Harold C. Nolte who had resided at Is land Lake for several months. Miss Judy Hans spent last weekend in Springfield where she was one of fifty-four 1960 county queen candidates vying for the title of county flair queen. The interior of an unoccu pied home in Oakland subdivi sion near Johnsburg was com pletely destroyed by fire, re sulting in damage amounting to about $6,000. The home was vacated about three weeks ago. The cause of the blaze was unknown. Areas north of McHenry were in fear after three armed men abandoned a car and escaped in the woods. Excitement and fear reminiscent of a fictional story unfolded in McHenry in the early hours of Monday morning when three bandits broke into Mc Henry business houses then eluded authorities following a barrage of bullets fired from speeding cars. In Fort Worth, Texas, a for mer McHenry couple, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brefeld, Jr., wel comed a daughter, Annette Marie, Jan. 15. Rev. Fr. John J. McGowan, former assistant at St. Pat rick's church in this city, but now a chaplain at Scott Field Air Force Base, called on Mc Henry friends recently. To be eligible for a new farm feed grain base, Getty said the operator must expect to receive 50 percent or more of his live lihood in the current year from the production of agricultural commodities; must have had at least two years' experience in the production of feed grains in the last five years; must have adequate equipment for the production of feed grains; the land must be suitable for the production of feed grains; and neither the owner nor the oper ator may have an interest in any other farm for which a feed grain base has been es-^ tablished. Interested producers who can meet these requirements should contact the county ASCS office before March 1 and file an ap plication, Getty said. What you believe depends largely on who and where you are. I 1 RED JACKET Bin nil McHENRY COUNTY WELL & PUMP CO. 385-5252-Res. 385-0713 4913 W. McCullom lit. Rd. "Spirit" Theme For Christian Science Sermon A deeper and more depend able basis for overcoming an ger and violence will be brought out in McHenry Christian Sci ence church Sunday. One of the Scriptural pas sages in the Lesson-Sermon en titled "Spirit" reads: "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city." A related passage from Sci ence and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Ed dy itates: "Rise in the streng- of Spirit to resist all that is* unlike good. God has made capable of this, and noth ing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man." Services at Christian Science society, Lincoln road and East wood lane, Wgin at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome. St. Joseph Catholic Church Richmond, Illinois l ather C. W. He learned everything first, then imparted the news to others. If he had a good memory, he was usually the best informed man in town. Who else read every release and then shouted it all over town? He also was the principal advertising medium for the tradespeople and shop- keepers. He announced their products, services and special sales. And in most communities the town crier reminded men of the ap proach of the Sabbath, urging them to be present for worship at the ap pointed hour in the churches of the community. The newspaper made the town crier a has-been. It has taken over alT4 his functions and performed them more efficiently. That includes remind ing men of the day of worship, and, through advertisements such ap this, urging us to worship. You see one thing hasn't changed. Man's need for God!
