Stratton. This is an increase over the previous year in which $126,553 represented the total of fees paid the state from this county. Mrs. Clara Schneider passed away Feb. 1 at her home in this city. Her entire lifetime was spent in this vicinity. Joe Regner, proprietor of a grocery and market on Main street, has purchased the Heimer building on Green street, where he plans to open a grocery and market about May 1. Mayor and Mrs. John R. Knox left on Wednesday for a motor trip to Florida expecting to return March 1. Alderman Kreutzer was appointed mayor pro tem to serve during the absence of Mayor Knox. Some kind of a danger signal should be installed at the in­ tersection of two heavily traveled highways in McHenry. That would be at the corner of Richmond Road and Elm street where U.S. 12 and State Route 20 come together. One of our readers has suggested that we take up the question of daylight saving time in McHenry this coming summer. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 7, 1946) Death from natural causes was the verdict of Coroner Ehorn in the death of Mrs. Helen Birk Long who was found dead in her room in the rear of the Ben Connor tavern north of McHenry Feb.3. Mrs. Long, 40 years old, had been operating the Connor tavern while Mr. and Mrs. Connor were in Florida. Formerly she had operated the Farm House tavern on Route 31, south of McHenry. During 1945 the Public Service Co., of Northern Illinois built 264 miles of rural power lines in its territory. Nearly 200 miles of the total were built since summer when the war production board began lifting its restrictions against the use of critical materials. The new power lines made electricity available to 1,100 farms in the area. Vale Adams arrived home last weekend after serving for several months in Saipan. He was one of McHenry's first young men to become an army pilot. SI-C John Doherty and Miss Shirley Smith were married at St. Mary's church at McHenry Tuesday morning by Father Baumhofer. Miss Christine Adams spent a few days this week visiting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Watterton in Chicago. Lloyd. W. Oeffling is one of 2,099 army veterans who have returned to the United States aboard the S.S. Cape Perpetua, which left Yokohama, Japan, on Jan. 14. This ship is one of the hundreds of navy and war shipping administration ships which accomplished the huge task of supplying U.S. sea air and land forces throughout the Pacific tour. The trades classes have been working on the front hall display cases at the local high school for sometime. They have finished installing neon lights in the cases to brighten up the school trophies. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 9, 1971) Preparations are being made by the Illinois Division of High­ ways for work crews to put 1960 population figures on road signs throughout the state. The state's official population count on April 1 of last year was 10,081,158 according to the Burea of Census, a gain of 1,368,982 or 15.7 per cent over 1950. Last rites were held at St. Patrick's Catholic church Monday morning for Mrs. Nettie Fleming, 74, widow of one of McHenry's long time businessmen, Richard Fleming. Merle L. Gardiner, instructor of chemistry at the McHenry high school, has received an Esso educational fellowship for study in biochemistry at Illinois Institute of Technology. The fellowship continues until he has received his master's degree for which he will attend night school until June and then study at summer school. Two McHenry students were among the forty-six sophomores who received the white cap of the nursing profession Feb. 5, at Marquette university in Milwaukee. Traffic fatalities in Illinois during the first half of January totaled 59, a 25 per cent reduction from the 79 recorded this time last year, according to Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie. He commented: "Last year Qllinois led the nation in saving lives on the highways by setting a record low in fatality rates. Efforts to intensify our safety program are a prime objective in 1971. Better law enforcement and better roads are the key elements of our traffic safety program".
