PAGE 6-PlAINPtALEK-FRIDAY. MARCH 5. 1971 Marian Downs McHenry In Triple Overtime Thriller ALL HAIL WARRIORS -- The McHenry high school sophomore football and basketball teams* cheerleaders celebrated the end of their 1970- 71 season with a pizza, pop and pa.iama party at Cheerleader Nona Amour's home in Island Lake. Following a chatting session and refresh ments, the girls enjoyed movies of their game activities, taken by Nona's father. Pictured above, left to right, are Nona, the party hos tess; Bobbie Rasmussen and Jayne McMillan of W onder Lake; Mary Beth Williams of Johns- burg, Kolleen Carrol of McHenry Shores and \ icki Peterson of Pistakee Bay, captain*. The enthusiastic group were giving a toast to their favorites, the McHenry Warriors, when the shutter clicked. by Bill Blankenhorn It figured to be that kind of ball game. McHenry and Mar ian had never played each other, though it probably could develop into one of the fiercest rival ries in the state. So the stage was set for what everyone pre dicted would be an excellent contest. However, not even in ones wildest dreams would you have thought of a triple overtime. But that is how it turned out as Marian edged the Warriors 81-75 in a tre mendously thrilling game from start to finish. The margin of victory was the biggest lead the Hurricanes had all night. They held a brief five point lead mid-way through the first period, but it was McHenry that held the lead most of the way after they scored three straight baskets at the start of the second quarter. The Warriors relinquished the lead for a brief time in the third quarter and fell behind one point in the fourth quarter after losing a six point advantage with 2:35 left in regulation time. The Hurricanes went ahead 67- 66 on a pair of free throws with 1:24 remaining and then Bruce Harbecke knotted the score with a free throw to end regulation time tied at 67 each. In the first overtime period it looked as if McHenry was going to blow the Hurricanes out of the gym as Gary Hosier scored on a 12 foot jumper and Bruce Harbecke connected on a 10 footer to give the Warriors a 71-67 advantage in the first minute. Weingart got twopoints back for Marian and then Bol ton scored on a tip-in to knot the score at 71-71 at the ena of the first three minute per iod. In the second overtime, Mc Henry once again took the lead on a Hosier basket, but once again Weingart got the equal izer. With 31 seconds remain ing, Ron Miller hit two clutch free throws to boost the War riors to a 75-73 edge but Jack son scored 10 seconds later for another tie score that pushed the game into a third extra period. The Warriors were unable to score the go ahead points in what turned out to be the final overtime period even though they controlled the tip- off. A traveling violation gave the ball *to Marian, and after they missed a shot, the War riors were once again guilty of a traveling call. The Hurri canes took advantage of the Warrior mistake as Bolton scored with 2:08 remaining. Kiefer converted two free throws and Weingart scored once again to give the Hur ricanes the victory. The game was a credit to hoth teams as they played ex ceptionally well throughout. Both teams shot well, rebounding with authority and played fine defense. Jackson led all scorers with a total of 38 points, most from 20 to 25 foot shots. Bolton add ed 17 and Weingart; added 14 for the Hurricanes. McHenry, which totaled two more field goals than Marian, was led by Harbecke with 18, Hosier with 17, Ron Miller and Jerry Mil ler with 10 and Gehrke and Hoffman added 9 each. Sophomores End Great Season With 74 To 46 Win Over Crystal Lake by Bill Blankenhorn T{)e sophomore basketball Warriors defeated Crystal Lake 74-46 in their season finale at Bucfcner gym last Friday night. The -young Warriors thus ended up with a 23 and 1 record on the year. McHenry never trailed in the game as they jumped out to a commanding 34-12 halftime leadi The visiting Tigers scor ed only three field goals the first half, all in the opening period, as the Warriors put on an excellent display of fine de fense. For the fourth time in their last five games, the Warriors shot 50 percent or better from the field as they connected on 27 of 52 attempts for a fine 52 percent average. Harbecke, Gehrke, and P'en- ner worked hard under the boards against strong opposi tion from Bolton, Weingart (a junior who should be outstanding in his senior year), Jackson and LaFontaine. In looking back, it seems to us that La- Fontaine's rugged, determined play from the opening whistle did much for his team's spir it. The Miller boys, Jerry and Ron, were all over the floor, but got a lot of attention from the Marian defense. Word got around that they are a couple of nifty guards who can shoot from the outside. Hoffman was sent in when needed and came through again, scoring 9 points. A strong second half defense, which allowed the Tigers only 13 points, and a total team ef fort were the keys to the War rior victory. Money has no value to its owner unless it also has val-„ ue to others. When we predicted last week that McHenry would win by a narrow margin, an impartial observer told us that each team had weaknesses, "but Marian has too many boys who can shoot." That they have. Some people admitted to hav ing mixed emotions while wat ching the game. That because Marian's team is made up most- ly of McHenrv boys. This was truly a great bas ketball game. There wasn't the faintest sign of rough play which some thought would happen when these two teams clashed. Nope. They both played it hard, but clean. One couldn't ask for bet ter sportsmanship. We have always said the play ers are the best sports in the These two teams set the pat tern for the future athletic re- 1 at ions hips between their schools.
