PAGE 16-PLAINDEALER, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14, 1971 * The Law Serves You GUEST FROM AFAR -- The third year Social Studies classes of the Montini'^pnmary center received an added bonus for their study of tropical regions, and the lifestyle of their people. Recently, McHenry's exchange student from Africa. Manasseh Gassna, presented a talk on his native land and its fascinating culture. The children have been studying the lands and people of Polynesia and Africa to find how, basically, man's needs are similar everywhere -- but climate and topography determine how he fulfills these needs. Small villages, booklets and murals were created by the children to illustrate these tropic regions. Review your check book and paid receipts to remember possible forgotten deductions. 3. Compute your federal tax first because the first figure required in computing your Illinois tax is the adjusted gross income figure from your federal return. 4. Remember your Illinois state income tax is a flat 2Vfe percent of your net income. 5. If you live in Illinois and work in another state, figure the Illinois tax just as though you had earned your income in Illinois. If you also pay income tax in the state where you work, - deduct the amount paid there from your tax due in Illinois. This may be subject to limitations listed in the form • instructions., 6. Claim a deduction for your Illinois income tax on your v federal return (it is allowed as jla personal expense deduction.) H 7. itemized personal expense H deductions (health care, in terest charges on non-business loans, alimony, taxes and charitable contributions) are allowed on federal forms.( However, they are not allowed' on the Illinois tax return. Certain business deductions are allowed. 8. If you received alimony from an ex-husband, this is taxable income. 9. Be careful you don't confuse the exemption figures. The federal form allows $625 per person, while the Illinois form allows $1,000 per person. 10. Servicemen must pay both federal and state tax on their military income unless they qualify for an exclusion because of (1) being on duty in a combat zone, (2) being in waters adjacent to a combat zone, or (3) hospitalized as a result of wounds received in combat. 11. Check everything over a final time. This might be the most important factor in getting your refund quicker. Make sure there are no unfilled blanks or incorrectly added figures. The large majority of tax form errors are small items such as missing Social Security numbers, missing signatures or missing attached W-2 forms. 12.
