April 14,1971) Our thirteenth President, Millard Fillmore, gave moral and financial assistance to Samuel F.B. Morse in his work on the telegraph. In ap preciation, Morse named the characters for the Fillmore children - dot for Dorothy, and dash for Dashiel. Recently, ninety-eight McHenry county 4-H'ers participated in the county judging contest held in con junction with ten other nor theastern Illinois counties. The contest was held at the DuPage county fairgrounds. The 4- H'ers each selected one of five areas in which to judge: Dairy, H o r s e s , H o r t i c u l t u r e , Livestock, or Poultry. Morning sessions consisted of selection classes with the 4- H'ers learning what the ideal animal should look like. In the afternoon, the youths judged in the area in which they had received selection training. In Dairy, the top judges were Barb Rich and Don Wilkening of Harvard, Donna Swanson of Woodstock and Jim Hill of Union. The top judges in Horses were Sue and Marge Winn of Richmond, Bonnie Black burn ' of Hebron, Cindy Gildemeister of McHenry, Eileen Frank of Marengo and Jean Slater of Cary. In Horticulture, Cathy Wells, of Harvard tied for top honors in the district. Other high in dividuals were Lance Echternach, Mike Conciatore and Kathy Tody, all of Har vard. Vernon Stade of Ringwood was top individual in Livestock judging, and Dale Schulz, Wesley Wittmus and Greg Cash of Harvard, Rick Krieger of Richmond and Nancy Kopsell of Huntley also placed high. In Poultry, the high in dividuals were Joe Rynes, Craig Trebes, and Donna Taylor of Harvard, and Chuck Cairns and Don Swanson of Woodstock. Don Arnold, assistant Ex tension adviser, who ac companied the 4-H'ers, stated that the McHenry county 4- H'ers were among the top in the district. On June 29 the top 4-H'ers in each area will be eligible to participate in the state judging contest at the University of Illinois at Urbana. K nowi^j sTHtL Wfe&ther Now that spring has arrived, what are its weather character istics and what causes them' Spring naturally brings wann ing weather, for in springtime each day is longer than the night. But it also brings more rainfall in most areas of the country. Usually rainfall builds up until early summer and then tapers off--into the dry fall months. Spring also brings gusty winds and short, hard rainfalls. It brings sticky, murky weather in the more southerly climates and the first "spring fever" attacks of the year. The reason for the rain lies in the gradual lessening of cold, dry air masses-in frequency of ap pearance. The warmer weather and more sunshine produce more thunder- heads and moisture and rainfall from them. Because the change of season to warmer air isn't always quietly effected, toma: does and brief severe storms often appear in springtime. Gtiif a) McJlentof McHENRY, ILLINOIS No. 111. Gas Co.
