Irlpool i'Vioto Clean Air Campaign Applies To Home Environment, Too cleaners. Dusty repair work and use of highly volatile liquids should take place in areas where the polluted air cannot circulate throughout the home. Furnace air filters should be changed at least every month, especially during the home heating season. Tests conducted by Owens- Corning Fiberglas Corpora tion, maker of Fiberglas Dust- Stop filters, indicate that fre quent replacement of furnace air filters also can help keep the furnace operating at peak efficiency. But if the air flow is restrict ed by a dirty filter, it could require the furnace to operate for longer periods of time in order to raise the air temper ature to a comfortable level. Another source of house hold air pollution is cleaning agents. These should never be combined. In some cases, the mixture could release toxic gases. Read labels carefully. locks off the electric power when the unit is not in use. Another safety factor is that the unit will not operate when the drawer is open. The unit, which contains an electrically operated ram that exerts a pressure of up to 2,000 pounds, requires no special wiring. It operates on regular 120-volt house current. The aluminum ram cover may be removed easily for cleaning. Styling of the cabinet is clean and smart. It has an attractive Air in the great outdoors may not be as clean as it used to be, but air in the home may be even dirtier. The main enemy is a tiny particle called dust, which can provide air pollution problems. Dust makes easy entry to homes. Doors, windows and other direct openings are its greatest welcomers. Unvent- ed clothes dryers, appliances and home workshops are ma jor contributors. There are some tools to remove home air pollution from the air and fight it at its source. Kitchen exhaust fans can remove vaporized oils and un wanted food odor. Easy-to- install clothes dryer vents are usually more efficient than diyer lint traps. Vacuum cleaner bags should be emptied frequently to prevent trapped dust from being forced back into the air. Dust from home workshops can be reduced by an exhaust fan and heavy duty vacuum Housewives who are sometimes twitted about their habit of "gift wrapping" the garbage may now have the last laugh with a new electric ap pliance that is gaining wide popularity. An ingenious in vention, hailed as "the first new major appliance since introduction of the household clothes dryer 30 years ago" is now appearing in dealers' stores. Unglamorously labeled a trash masher, the new ap pliance does just that; it mashes trash into a compact bundle and turns it out literally as a gift wrapped package. Only 15 inches wide, the new appliance can be built into a kitchen cabinet or used as a free-standing receptacle. Normal household trash and garbage, including cartons, tin cans, bottles, paper or foil usually placed in waste baskets may be deposited in it. Then, by simply pressing a START button, the unit compacts trash to approximately a fourth of its original size. Designed to compact the accumulation of a week's trash for the average family, the unit eliminates daily trips to the garbage can. TTie bulk of the trash is reduced on a 4'/2 to 1 ratio -- that is, four full gar bage cans of trash are com pacted down to the size of one. It is all packed neatly into an extra-sturdy reinforced paper with a tough silicone-coated polyethylene liner that is practically leakproof. A built-in chemical deodorizer sprays each load when the door is closed. The spray controls odors and keeps the kitchen smelling fresh and clean. It also reduces fly and insect population. When the bag is full -- usually about once a week for the average family -- it may be easily removed for carryout. A sliding access panel hides the controls and the masher, as well as the key lock switch. The latter is a safety feature which • vinyl top, brushed chrome handle and is available in edged avocado, edged copper or white, which will fit in with almost any decorative scheme. Commonwealth Edison suggests your inspection of the new appliance at your dealer's. It is not only a convenient household aid but is also a partial answer to the growing problem of how to dispose of trash -- a national and world wide problem that is growing larger daily.
