rAOE 6-PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, 1971 McHenry Nine Downs Crystal Lake 5-3 In Conference Opener I j 4 t •» -> • 9a m y >>4, m, by Bill Blankenhorn The Warriors got off to a good start in North Suburban conference play with a come from behind 5-3 victory over Crys tal Lake last Tuesday at McCracken Field. Crystal Lake opened with single runs in eacn oi ine ursi three innings, but winning pitcher Greg Freund shut off the Tigers on only a wasted double over the last four innings. Mean while, the Warriors were fighting back with single runs in the second and third innings, and then unloaded with three big runs in the bottom of the fifth for the victory. Catcher Frank Higgins led the offensive attack for the Warriors as he had three for three with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Freund went the distance in giving up six hits. He struck out eight and walked just three. PLAINDEALER PHOTO It was our pleasure the past week to call on several people who are partially disabled. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR John Stilling is looking chipper, still has a good crop of hair on his head and is gaining on his 77th birthday. When we got into memories of days gone by, John didn't get much chance. Margaret remembers when housewives used to pair up for visiting days. They went calling. And probably had a cup of tea at each home visited. In conversations in the past, some of the younger generation looked puzzled when mention was made of visiting days. Margaret remembered. Called on Mrs. Math Rauen, still spry and sharp as she looks forward to her 95th birthday. Says she can hardly remember when she was 65 years old. Saw a picture of the Rauens when they were young. She was a good-looker and Math was a handsome young fellow. Had quite a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Peter M. Schaefer. Both have had illness, but can still come up smiling. Took time to look over a Prairie Farmer magazine that just arrived. During our early days on the farm we used to watch for the mailman when the Prairie Farmer was due to arrive. Couldn't wait to read "The Song Of The Lazy Farmer". Mrs. Joe Miller, Washington St., came to the door in her wheel chair and gave us a nice welcome. She's going to walk one of these days. As we walked to Mrs. Paul Doherty's door, we met her sister, Helen Bolger Green, who had toured over from Woodstock. That was a good three-way visit that could have lasted much longer. When old friends meet... Found Mrs. Mary Berle recuperating in McHenry Hospital. After a tough illness, she is looking fine and comes through like "Miss Photo-Flash of '71". Found Mrs. Henrietta Davis watching a golf tournament with the clearest TV picture you would ever want to see. Never knew Mrs. Davis so well, but her late husband was one of our favorites. We used to meet in the Glenny Wattles Drug Store and always had some fun. Anyhow, as we entered the door, Mrs. Davis greeted us with a smile that lingers. Never met Anthony Weyland, but it wasn't hard to get acquainted. Nice fellow. Didn't know he is an Old Timer in these parts. Must renew our visit. Next door we found Mr. and Mrs. Louis Stoffel and in the course of conversation learned that they are great- grandparents. Now, where did that time go? Mrs. Stoffel has an old-fashioned pantry (neat as a pin). We like a pantry. Sat in a real comfortable chair as we chinned with Rena Schaid. After a good visit, it was hard to leave that chair. Seemed to just fit our broad back. v Found Gertie Barbian waiting for a ball game to start. She is a "Chicago fan"...likes both the Cubs and Sox. In spite of lengthy disability, she is still the same Gertie. Nobody can ever take her place in doing for others. If somebody needed help, all you had to do was call Gertie. She had the know-how and the good heart. Mrs. Glenn Welty was her usual gracious self, thankful for surgery that allows her to walk again. She has a big chow dog that we wouldn't want to argue with--but he finally waggged his tail after he was assured it was O.K. for us to enter. Mrs. Art Smith, looking neat and trim as ever, told us of failing eyesight, but thankful she can still enjoy T.V. In every place we visited, we learned how much TV means to those who cannot get out too much. Called on one of our grade school teachers, Frances Froehlich. Hope she doesn't remember some of the devilment we got into in her class. Our last call was at the home Warrior Thinclads Lose To Crown By Bill Blankenhorn Operating a bit short-handed due to Spring vacation, the Warrior track teatn was soundly defeated by Crown by a 82-45 score. Keith Hutchinson was a double winner for the Warriors as he swept to victory in the 880 and the mile runs as McHenry won just five of fifteen first places. Other first place win ners for the Warriors were Terry McGibbons in the two mile, Rick Weigman in the low hurdles and Jeff Cole in the pole vault. Crown also won the frosh- soph meet by a 90-37 score. Crown 82 - McHenry 45 2 Mile; McGibbon (Mc), Varless (C), Gerstein (Mc). Time - 10:56.1 120 HH: Fawn (C), Jackson (C), Penick (Mc). Coast Guard News of Mrs. Elizabeth Husch and her daughter, Leona. That was another pleasant visit. And, what do you know? She is a Cub fan! We had so much pleasure in visiting with so many fine people that we look forward to making the rounds again. 'Twas a nice Sunday so we drove up to Honey Bear Farm. Hundreds of other people did the same thing. It goes without saying we were pleased to meet Elvera Durland whohastoeen greeting Honey Bear visitors ; for several years. Met Eddie Pieroni Sunday night after both his Cubs and our Sox had lost double- headers. What could we say? Bill Kreutzer brought us a calendar with sports events for every day -- printed too early for table tennis.
