Worthy Matron & Worthy Patron Night-Acacia H a l l - 8 p . m . * Right now anything may go in the whirlwind of fashion, but the mature woman must still follow the dictates of good taste and appropriateness to avoid looking dowdy or ridiculous. The older woman often feels neglected by the fashion in dustry, but that doesn't mean that she has to put on a "uniform" for her age, says Katharine Neumann, McHenry county Extension adviser. Careful selection and emphasis on details that enhance good features and minimize any defects can help the mature women look and feel ageless. When shopping for clothing, the older woman should first take figure and fit into con sideration. Changes in body c o n t o u r s , w h i c h o f t e n a c company age, may make a good fit difficult to achieve. But regardless of age, a garment is only as attractive as it is suitably fitted to the wearer. A good foundation garment can help create a better formed^ figure and reduce or eliminate fitting problems. Every woman should focus her attention on clothing that is becoming rather than on the currently fashionable items, However, an older woman call maintain a youthful ap pearance by adapting current fashions to her individual tastes, traits and figure. Mrs Neumann lists some design features that generally flatter the mature figure: -Soft lines, colors and fabrics give a softening effect to the face as well as maintain a slimming body line. -Patterned fabrics scaled to the wearer's size can help to emphasize best features. For example, bold, dominant patterns often call attention to figure faults, and "spotty" or "staggered" patterns are usually difficult for most figures to wear regardless of age.\ -Dresses with indefinite waistlines or none at all flatter the figure with a thickened waist. -Two piece garments made of contrasting fabrics or colors tend to shorten and widen the figure. -Flared or gored skirts help hide large hips and provide .more freedom for walking and Slicing. -grouser-style slacks rather thaA the tightly fitted, tapered slacks usually look better on the older figure. Color, in addition to fit and design, plays an important role in enhancing the older woman's appearance. For instance, an older woman should avoid over emphasizing the neutral colors- -especially if her natural coloring has become more neutral and lost some of its glow. Mature women who have lost much of the contrast in their skin and hair coloring generally look best wearing colors of middle values and intensities. Extremely bright colors often harden a woman's face, and dark blues and black drain color from the face. Light and bright colors and, surprisingly, even black tend to increase apparent size. Mrs. Neumann explains that these colors create this effect because they contrast strongly with most backgrounds. You don't have to avoid them entirely, but wear them sparingly, she adds.
