\ PAGE 8-PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1971 Arbor-Earth Day Essay Winners Are Announced Following are some of the top winners in the essay contest for Arbor Day and Earth Day, held at Valley View school. Others will appear ne£t week: 6th Grade Winner Cheryl Thacker Mr. An derson, Teacher WHY THE EARTH IS IMPORTANT TO ME There are numerous reasons the Earth is important to me. A few of them are. 1. Earth withholds many people in it. Even though many people are bad in it, good people in it depend on Earth for a place to live, worship, and love. 2. It has harmless creatures in it that need a place to live just like people do. Even though some of these man has no use for in the future, man may have to depend on them for survival. 3. The Earth is important to me because it has the climate and materials for man to survive on. 4. Most of all Earth is im portant to me because God made it and if he did not there would not be any people plants animals or anything. 5th Grade Winners Julie Boeldt Mr. Benjamin, Teacher The earth is important to me because I live on it so I am involved in what happens to it. It's we who are destroying ourselves. When you take a ride into Chicago, you know when you are near there because of all the haze and smog from the factories and trucks and cars. This is what it must be like in all the big cities. I love to swim, but soon there won't be any clean water to swim in. I love animals, but our wildlife is disappearing. We'd better do something fast! There are lots of ways you can help save our earth and make it a better place. One way is to not use colored paper towels, tissues and napkins because the dye does not dissolve. Also, you can collect bottles and glass jars and return them so they can be used again. It helps too if you pick up any trash you see lying around. Let's all do our best to save the earth! . Steven Cable Mr. Benjamin, Teacher The Earth today is really falling apart with the problems of pollution and over population. There will have to be some way to stop these killers, or man may be starved by the over-population or killed by the pollution. This over coming killer is caused by everyone. It is caused by cars, planes, trucks, boats, and people that throw garbage in water and most of all the factories depositing waste into the water and smoke into the air. If man just ignores the problem, he will be smoked smogged, and shoved out by pollution and over-population. The Earth is important to everyone, because it is the only place for man to live. If man keeps on polluting the Earth, he will destroy all living things on this planet. Who knows, man may kill himself off by 2,000 A.D. and never exist again. 4th Grade Winne^ Sandy Fuller Miss Hamiltc Teacher A lot of people don't thir The Earth is important. The same people are the ones whox are polluting it. After they pollute it, they say "Please save our Earth!" "We'll die" "Wecan't go on like this!" But when others are picking up, they are busy polluting it again. With all the oil slicks, smoke stacks, and exhaust pipes, man doesn't know what he's getting into. Or does he? Maybe he's just gone too far. Or maybe he's just too lazy to pick up what he's left behind. By the way, have you seen any of the birds and fish off the coast of California? In case you haven't, here's a description: SLOPPY, OILY, MONSTERS- Please help us save these creatures! Because if they die, we die. This is the punishment for our crime. It's our problem: now we have to solve it. 3rd Grade Winners Nancy Popovich Mrs. Van der Velde, Teacher You can help save the earth by stopping water pollution go fish can breath and live better. God please save us from our own trash. If you're a litterbug Stop Now!! and help keep the earth clean. Please people stop smoking and you'll save the earth and your own life. Only you can save the earth by stop burning leaves. Do you know there isn't much wildlife left because of air pollution smoke and other things? Join car pools, one car with four people in it puts out one-fourth the carbon monoxide in the air. Do your part in anti-pollution pledge. After all it's your earth too. Help save trees. Take grocery bags to the store and . reuse them. Don't use harsh pesticide like D.D.T. They contaminate animals and the water. So stop now and fight air pollution and all the other things to save our earth. You can help save the ground and all the crops by throwing trash. You can save the whole earth just by stopping these things. So save our Earth and you will live a better life. Kim Cynowa - Mrs. Rabbitt, Teacher Please save our Earth now or it will die. The Earth means a lot to me. It means my home and my family, it means the lakes, the skies and the animals. It means my children, too, and the trees, plants, and the sun that I can see, and the smell of green in the spring.
